Ranking Smaller Sites

For the people that produce various 5-10 page sites and scale them up appropriately if they show potential. What is your linking strategy to initially get them to rank?

Good content and low competition long tail keywords is not enough by itself to get you to rank.

So many "old" methods (tiered link building, etc) are dramatically less effective and I cant picture someone manually grinding out blog comments, profile links, web 2.0s (which are less effective now) (+ would take hours) for a site that is one of ten they will be making this month.

So for people that fit this criteria what are you doing? Is the only option here a PBN? Buying Link Packages? What is the secret here?

  • I Disagree. If you do not overoptimize your keywords, you shall rank in top200 for your KWs AT LEAST without any backlinks whatsoever.

Social signals have always been working quite well for me.

    • Which is going to drive almost zero traffic, unfortunately. The goal should always be to get to page 1. And from there, the top 3.

To the OP, plenty of the "old" methods still work just fine in theory. You just need to be willing to twist things up a little and accept a slightly greater risk in tanking your site. Just don't put all of your eggs into one basket. (In other words, don't rely on just one website. Crank out a handful and rank them.)
  • Hi,
If i want to get any site ranked then i'll use quality content keyword with higher monthly search and other manual strategies for ranking like Web2.0,Social bookmarking etc etc and after that i'll buy backlinks from High Pr sites are more helpful.

    • By rank i mean first page. I released my site 3 days ago and im ranking 75th for main keyword atm. I want to be in top 10.

1.) DO web 2.0's hold any weight still?
      2) High PR sites like?
    • Have you bought high PR links ??
  • Why should your SEO strategy be different for a ten page site than it would be for a 100 or 1000 page site? You still want the same results and that is top placement in Google search for your chosen keyword. Put the same effort into the SEO as you would if the site were already populated with lots of content. And, then just keep adding more content regularly as you go along. If you added one new short article daily, you would have many hundreds of pages by the end of the first year.

    • Theres a big difference. If it was an authority site typically less backlinks are needed to be made by you. You can rely more on social, etc.

If its a small niche site you have to do more work on your own.
  • I build small sites, but not THAT small. I usually have 20-30 indexed pages with valuable and juicy content. This is something that costs at least $70 per 500 words. In addition to that, I also build all types of power pages, tools, visual assets that I pitch to different people via email outreach.

All in all, I invest approx $2k - $3k per site, including custom design... and I go for mainstream keywords (15k+ monthly searches + highly profitable).

I don't build web2.0 nor do I buy link packages or use PBN-s. Anything that can be "bought" (especially packages) are not worth a dime in long-term. Profile links and blog comments are not my cup of tea either. It's more or less churn and burn method.
  • Excuse me, but what is PBN?

It's not that hard to rank small websites. Profile backlinks, Social bookmarks, blog comments will do the trick!

You'll need to have 100% external links ranking the pages, the same as any new site regardless how large the site is. Every bit of link authority originates from external links (all of it).

The advantage of a larger site is spreading the inbound external link authority across multiple relevant internal pages & ranking for additional keywords (more bang for your buck).
  • Worrying about links before you've got beyond 10 pages is probably a bad way of thinking. Link building ISNT dead, but doing it badly is.

PBN are working. But do you need them? That's down to your skills.

If you've got the skills to make use of PBN then do it, if you don't then don't.

Only way you're gonna know is test and track.
