So here's my story. Please read and leave feedback

So when I was about 14 I started designing sites with my best friend. anyways that was 14 years ago. Anyways my mom was a poor single mom and she could no longer afford the internet. This was probably around the year 2000. So about 3 years ago I was just sick of my work situation and really wanted to start my own web business. Since I stop a lot and I mean a lot has changed on the internet.
So I ended up buying a domain and hosting and I also fed deeply into the guru get rich over night BS. Spent hundreds of dollars in one night on software that I thought at the time would get me rich in one night. so without really having knowledge other then little things I picked up on about marketing and SEO from various websites and here of course. obviously this was a huge failure and disappointment. so I stopped for a couple years just because I realized that I didn't know anything and I was wasting my time. I really lost hope and motivation. well a couple weeks ago I got the Business bug due to mine and my fiancés work situation. Only this time instead of wasting money on guru software I put it towards literature of all things that I need and want to know before I get started again.
This time I really want my fiancé to jump on board cause obviously two heads are better then one. she's very, very motivated at everything she puts her mind to so it just seems right. the only thing is that she's a little scared to invest her time into studying because she seen me fail at this before, which is completely understandable, but I explained to her that I didn't know what I was doing and I'm studying this time so we can do it right. My plans aren't to become a millionaire. the goal is to live comfortably on our terms and not someone else. So. last week like I said I bought literature and started studying. but in the meantime I cracked open an old website of mine and optimized it to the best of my knowledge. I started back-linking and have gotten feedback from actual people and not spam or bots. I haven't sold anything but seeing real people is already a better step for me then before. And I want to show Laura that owning your own business on line has no limits to your success. you get out what you put into it and the internet is forever. I also opened the site to help out my niece and start her a little college fund, since I don't have kids of my own and my niece is my life.

So I have a couple questions and comments

1. How often and how much should I backlink in a week?

2. Is it ok to go after high PR links as well as low ones at the same time?

3. How soon after starting back-linking will Google take notice?

4. Do any of the guru software actually work? Not that I'm taking that route again but m just curious.

5. If you don't know HTML, CCS, Etc..... Is it ok to use a site builder. They never turn out looking as good as if you knew how to.

Any feedback whether it be answering my questions or not is more then welcome. I really want this to work this time so please anything that will help is wanted. Thanks, Steve

Responding to question #5, I have used Wordpress to build my blogging site and have had good results. I tried different themes until I found one that looks pretty good and is very customizable. There are both free and paid themes available, I was just lucky that the one I found was free. Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback first off. So your saying you did it without having built any of the theme yourself? It was totally someone elses theme?

So I have a couple questions and comments

        1. How often and how much should I backlink in a week?
How long is a piece of string? Or as much as you can without descending into spam!

        2. Is it ok to go after high PR links as well as low ones at the same time?
Absolutely essential, as many as high PR links as you can, also not just high PR, high quality links of any sort you can get/afford.

        3. How soon after starting back-linking will Google take notice?
Maybe a day, maybe 3 months, but just keep at it. Build relevance, authority and traffic links, then G will follow.

        4. Do any of the guru software actually work? Not that I'm taking that route again but m just curious.
Nah! Not unless you actually know why and when you need a specific tool.

        5. If you don't know HTML, CCS, Etc..... Is it ok to use a site builder. They never turn out looking as good as if you knew how to.
Hardly anybody builds html sites anymore, just go with Wordpress, pick a suitable theme, and add your content, will look just dandy

Kudos to you for not giving up, and learning to learn this time.

Just took a look at that cake decorating site.

Oh boy, no wonder that you fail each time.

Ever heard of over monetizing and duplicate content?

Typical case of stuff as many ads as you can and make the site as boring as possible, and probably someone read something good about tags, well they're not.

Stop studying, start doing and learn from your mistakes along the road.

Try different traffic generation techniques, stick to the ones that work, ditch the ones that don't, don't keep beating a dead horse as they say.

Don't end up in the loop of reading WSO after WSO under the excuse of studying. If their techniques were so successful they wouldn't be selling it for $7,-/$17,-

If I have to give some more detailed advice:

      - Pick a niche you like but make sure it's profitable
      - Write your own content
      - Contact the experts in your niche and do an expert round up, ask them for contributions, perhaps you could even turn it into an infographic when you ask them a few questions
      - Inform them when the expert round up go's life
      - Interview some other people in your niche and host that at your site

This should result in some natural links, then do some outreaching to a few hundred webmasters in your niche and this should get the ball rolling with zero investment besides your time spend.

You can't go wrong with that.

I appreciate the input but I cant agree with stopping studying. I made a bunch of mistakes in the past that I learned from but I still don't have the knowledge and im still not making money three years later. I thought studying till I knew what I was doing would be the best route. and learning from those mistakes will be a lot easier when I actually know the mistake that I made.

I have a real hard time believing that and I think the problem is that you're not persistent. Some people don't see the value of small things so they give up quickly, forgetting that small things can get momentum and/or small things can be scaled big time.

Twice in my life I've been pretty successful in situations where the majority would've given up already.

Determination and persistence are imo the most important skills to succeed in business.

This is totally true, I made 3 cents in my first month learning internet marketing, 4 dollar in my second month, 12 dollars in my third month, making this story short, I end up with over $3,500 in my first year of internet marketing.

My first 3 months I made around $16, this is the time which most people quit, actually they quit right in the first month making just 3 cents.

Hope that inspire somebody, patient and hard work is king when you are learning internet marketing.

You're being a bit impatient. There's quite a lot of users on WF, but not every thread gets commented. And maybe many of those have nothing to add after JJPerkins' answer. If you want more specific answers try asking a bit more specific questions. In addition, you can find answers to all kind of backlinking questions by searching the forum.

If you're doing manual linkbuilding, I don't think you're in any kind of danger. You can probably see in couple of weeks if Google noticed your new backlinks, but it's quite hard to tell if some particular ones had an effect on search engine results. If you're expecting some kind of dramatic effect it's likely that you're going to be disappointed. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

Guru software is a terribly vague definition, and so is site builder. I'm sure some WSO stuff works, and I'm sure some doesn't. Some site builders are good enough or even great for what they are, some are garbage. I'm a WP webdev myself, but I've been saying that entrepreneurs who are just starting or short on funds should just take the most well-known Finnish site builder software. It's easy to use, HTML is good enough, it doesn't tie you to anything, and the monthly fee is fairly affordable.

Well it depends on what you mean by "studying" really.
Personally I'm a believer in learning to do something well if you're going to do it.

But if your studying consists of buying WSO's, then as Nik0 says, that's a dead end road.
You do want to combine your learning with taking action, but knowing your action has a good probability of success helps.

Focus on one aspect at a time, and be ready to take action as soon as you can.
Persistence and determination is great, but continuing to do the things you've done before and expecting different results? We all know where that goes!

    Learn HTML.

Life as an SEO gets a lot easier when you know what your looking at. That doesn't mean you can't use a CMS like Wordpress, it means researching how things work gets a heck of lot easier (research comp. pages, tweaking your own pages).

Even If you use something like Wordpress, odds are your theme sucks for SEO because web/devs that build most themes suck at SEO, most could care less, all they care about is pretty things which won't rank a page.

If you seriously want to learn all you can about SEO, you'll learn the basics (ex: HTML), how to do research on your own & what makes things tick.

Wordpress and wordpress themes pretty much gives you the same as the demo site

If you choose a theme with lots of graphics in the demo, you will of course have to source your own graphics, as the theme will almost certainly be supplied without graphics - so in that respect when you install the wordpress theme it will not look anything like the demo site

So you're not reading the thread then? Those questions were answered about as thoroughly as they can - as I said above. You can keep chatting if someone wants to keep it up, but if you want answers to questions you seriously need to ask something that can be answered.

Obviously I wasn't being literal about "help me lol", but that's the impression I'm getting here. You gotta start by helping yourself. Take someone's comment and build on that for example.

Should you study? Yes indeed. Should you attempt to market something? Absolutely. But that was already said, and now I'm just parroting the previous comments by JJPerkins et all.

If you want more than SEO and PPC this is probably the wrong section of the site. There's Mind Warriors that deals with self-improvement, motivation and the like.

Why not do both at the same type, bring in practice what you've learned, you must've learned a lot of things by now with all your studying.

Or are you still in the decision phase between studying and doing?

There's a difference between drag & drop sitebuilders & learning HTML for SEO.

Sitebuilders aren't going to explain whats going on with a web page.
