Seo link structuring on websites

So I'm hearing contradictory statements saying that the following structures are better than one another for SEO placement.

example 1: www.yoursite.com/product-whatever/

example 2: www.yoursite.com/product-whatever.html

I have an ecommerce website that sells car parts... now if that product is within a category... what would be better for seo?

example 1: http://www.yoursite.com/suspension/p...-whatever.html

example 2: www.yoursite.com/product-whatever.html

Bruce Clay the SEO guy who invented siloing says to use the directory structure, so you'd be better with www.yoursite.com/suspension/product-whatever.html

People who follow his lead such as themezoom.com also say to use the directory stucture

You would of course put suspension parts in the suspension directory, and electrical parts in the electrical directory, etc.
