I am doing to some seo to my site.

Lets say, I'm a locksmith in New York.

I am doing up some links for the front page of my site. e.g.

locksmith in the Bronx
locksmith in Queens
locksmith in flushing meadows

Thanking of using Anchor Text:

locksmith bronx
locksmith service in queens ny
locksmith service flushing meadows ny

In Post Panda and Penguin -Is this good or bad Achor text to use or could it be improved upon?

  • I would just make sure that you also focus on what's best for your visitors. For example, I don't think people tend to Google "locksmith bronx", I think they would be more apt to search "Bronx Locksmith". It's minor, but make sure you're designing your site for people, and Google will reward you accordingly.

    • Thanks A2hosting, but I am just very weary of using

anchor text which might be flagged by Google as spammy

      Or would a "area of a city" + " a service" strategy e.g.

"Bronx locksmith" be considered spammy by Google?

  • It links to quality content

All I want to know is

    1) Am I better off diluting the anchor text e.g. best locksmith bronx
    or
    2) Assume that Google would consider "locksmith bronx" longtail and would not penalize me?

He said where links come (the link source).
  • Sorry, I should have stated!

    These are internal links.

That changes things a bit considering Google is more lenient on internal links compared to external links. Internal links don't really have a noticeable trust issue like unknown external link sources (ex: nofollow tag).

With internal links you have complete control over the entire pages SEO, keyword proximity is important, relevance is also important (both internal & external pages). What I mean by proximity is surrounding an anchor-text link with keyword rich plain text and/or things like an <h1> tag (example).

      Example of keyword proximity:
      • <h1></h1>

We're located in Queens NY, we do service calls fast...

In that example above the <h1> tag (towards top of web page) shows highest on-page authority for the plain text (Locksmith Service). The proximity of that <h1> plain text is important to the keyword anchor-text link (Queens NY). I also followed up behind the keyword anchor-text with the plain text keyword service (we do service calls fast...). I'm only showing you this to show that adding keywords to a web page doesn't have to look spammy, like that list of keywords in OP.

Google is good at putting pieces of the puzzle together (associating plain text with anchor-text) when it comes to on-page SEO. You kinda have to mentally block out the stop words to see how Google will be looking at the on-page text/links.

Here's the stop words removed from that same example (above), which leaves the text that Google is focused on:
      • Locksmith Service located Queens NY service calls fast

Remember in this example the <h1> tag puts emphasis on the keyword locksmith service which is in close proximity to the keyword anchor-text Queens NY, which is tying the first page about locksmiths to a 2nd internal web page focused on a GEO location (Queens NY). Repeat with additional relevant internal pages/keywords/links...

    • If you have no clue about how to SEO or building links, and are stuck in life having to use spam blasting automated software. Or if you are a complete idiot that needs to build 8.4 million worthless links to rank for a keyword that nobody cares about.

      You should
      Use the following anchor text:

  • If you over optimize your page for any keywords and creating hyper links for ranking then may be your ranking affect. Generally interlinking improves your your ranking.
  • thanks for all the great replies so far.

Would anchor text would be best?

best locksmith in queens and bronx
    locksmith queens
    locksmith bronx
    locksmith service queens and bronx

Is anchor for internal linking purposes best kept short or not?

    • Yukon's pretty much nailed.

I would add that internal keyword links can negatively impact keyword density. Be careful that your whatever anchor text you are using keeps keyword density below 2.5 - 3.0%.

If you start to bump into keyword density issues, research some LSI keywords and consider using those.

Anchor texts aren't as important as they used to be. Here's what Matt Cutts has to say:

What to expect in SEO in the coming months

I don't think you should spend too much time on anchor text. Just my 2 cents though.
