Hello, I am trying to learn as much as I can about marketing, I need to increase my rankings on google in particular, I understand that Google is constantly changing it's algorithms so I am wondering how SEO guys deal with this but I am thinking you must have basic knowledge of SEO techniques anyway. Can anyone recommend any good course for me to help my site please?

    Two things never change:
    • Plain text
    • Quality links

My advice is learn how to do your own research, SEO is mostly research (competition, tweaking pages/links).

I think you could use this and a few related forums. Start reading other threads and ask questions if ONLY they were NOT being answered by others... You can learn almost everything from here!

What I would recommend is to search google for "SEO Tutorials" or "What is SEO", everyone here is right, its all about your own techniques, however familiarize yourself with the terms used, and basic fundamentals of quality links, content, keywords, what to look for, etc etc. After you learn the basics, you can then develop your own strategies.

Courses suck compared to blogs. Seriously. Everything inside a course you can find for free online.

You'll learn a lot more on this forum and on popular seo blogs like Quicksprout, Mozblog, Search Engine Journal, sourcewave, etc.

The people who buy courses are the ones who've never heard of these sites ... and won't even bother google searching them because they're not hyperlinked here.

With the possible exception of SEJ, all those sites listed are selling crap they take from other sites, forums, blogs...

I personally recommend you this SEO course:

A new comprehensive SEO guide â€" a free tutorial with the best SEO practices

That's a good collection of all the basic SEO tips and answers to the questions each beginning website promoter may have.

From what I can tell, that doesn't appear to be a course, looks more like you would be paying a monthly fee only to use their tools? What I need is someone or something which can advise on optimizing my site and doing what's needed to increase my google rankings, would that course help me with this?

My history is that I had paid not one but a "few" different SEO guys over the past 4 years who "guaranteed" that they would have my site on first page on google within 3-6 months, end result, none of them could deliver. I even paid one Canadian firm for an entire year in advance and they too could not deliver. Last year I tried hiring a tutor to teach me and we started working together on my original html site which I had designed and created myself but he then suggested I convert to a new Wordpress site which he said comes with SEO tools and would be better, when we did that, my old site which still had ok rankings suddenly disappeared from google and the new site is almost non-existant on google and when I asked him about the situation with my old site, he never gave me an answer.

I then told myself since I never had good luck hiring anyone maybe I may be better off learning SEO and try to build the rankings myself so I tried joining a couple of SEO forums to ask questions but never got a reply to certain questions so I got stuck then I joined this forum a few weeks ago hoping to try to get some answers on how best to move on from here.

    Hi Mike,

I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but I don't SEO especially if you are a newbie. It takes years to get the skills you need to become a true professional in SEO. There are a few SEO marketers who make millions of dollars with SEO. But they deal with SEO for years and even dream about it.

SEO is a very frustrating technique in my opinion. Some marketers try to rank their page on page 1 on Google. After months they accomplish it and then Google changes its algorithm. And boom, you accomplished 0 again.

In a nutshell: Try to build a stable business. There are 100 better marketing techniques.

Again: This is not what you want hear probably. But I just want you to consider this side of the medal. If you decide to stick to it, then I hope you will become a true SEO legend and laugh at me one day :-)

Well Patrick, I don't want promises of gold which is what I have been getting in the past and it cost me dearly over the years. Yes, I am very aware of the google changes, I just figure I will be better off doing something rather than nothing.

Any links or leads to the "100 better marketing techniques"?
