I should probablly know this already, but do backlinks need to be constantly added to maintain jucie? Does there come a point when the old backlinks don't help maintain position anymore... I guess I'm asking if they cease to be useful for the purpose you used them a bit like articles will sometimes they stay arround for ages but often traffic will start to slow down from them... different purpose but you get the idea.

In my opinion is depends on how active your keyword is, of there is a lot of change of sites in the listing and you really haven to battle to maintain your listing you will need fresh backlinks but in combination with fresh content, you will lose your listing even with lots of backlinks if you're content is stale and there is much competition.

On the other hand if it is a niche where there isn't much going on, only fresh content and a view quality links will keep you on first page easely.

Just because a backlink is older doesnt diminish its value. Most would be happy having an old link from DMOZ. The thing that can hurt you is abnormal linking practices. For example, you build 5000 links this month and then 100 next month and then 0 the month after.... You should make building links an ongoing natural thing. It would be better to build 500 a month every month consistently than to build them erratically or to build a lot and then stop altogether.
