Nofollow Links From Huffington Post??

So bare with me my experienced linkers I recently found an article on the Huffington Post that was all about the same topic as one of my niche sites. So I did a fairly lengthy comment with a new slant on the subject in the comment thread - of course I dropped a link to my niche site. It was accepted because I am a very active commenter on HP.

SO Question is: I know that any link in a Huffington Post comment is a nofollow, but if it's approved, is there any effect on your site at all?
  1. does the nofollow link help your site in the SERPS
  2. does it have no effect at all
  3. does it hurt your site in the SERPS
Can't imagine Google seeing the Huffington Post as a "bad neighbourhood".

Please correct me as I have never really been much of a linker. Just settled for a decent living without the risk of making bad linking mistakes.

I had a link from Huffington Post that linked back to a great article written by a university student. I did it because I wanted to see if the position changed in SERPs. I monitored that article for 2 months and it never changed. Didn't help with SEO one bit. Page was a PR4.

The only reason I even tried doing that is because this guy swore it would skyrocket me to the top, lol. Not!

    1. Yes it has an effect. Every link (even crap ones) have value. Nofollow links are helping your backlink profile to look more natural. So this is a good thing.

    2. Nope, it won't hurt your website. At least not for now, who knows what will Google decides tomorrow

It certainly doesn't hurt to get linked from Huffington Post. But if by "effect" you mean something concrete that you can see happening before your eyes you're probably going to be sorely disappointed. Google might or might not take that link in account even if it's nofollow, but it's not going to make or break your visibility.
    Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

Well for me- any kind of backlink (follow or no follow) still has an effect in SERPs. A no follow backlink in HP is not that bad. I would always consider that link helpful for my site ranking because HP is one good site to get backlink NOT only for SERPs but also to get direct visit from that site. Imagine if you have a useful information shared on HP, you can always attract people from that site to visit your site.
