I thought this sounded really far fetched, but apparently Matt Cutts has debunked it.

Why you are unexplained when in that video the author explained it in plain English.
Google announces they have right to use header info of the image files to extract
the date, location and camera of the image taken. It seems they will soon discard
the idea similar to G+1, as there are tone of possiblities for the marketer manipulations.

As Matt Cuts says, google will use it if available.

      That's not what he said.

"Reserve the right to use" is quite usual Cutts' disclaimer. It means something like this: "Doesn't work like that as we speak, but might at some point in the future, so maybe you don't want to build a whole business upon this thingmajig".

    EXIF data as ranking Factor
I've tested EXIF data on/off over the years & haven't seen anything that would move an image in the SERPs.

The strongest things for images are:
    • Image alt-text
    • Authority links pointing at the image URL
    • Surrounding the image HTML code with relevant plain text keywords
    • Page title where the image is located
