H tags do not damage your seo since you use them in the correct form. In a post don't use several times the same H tag. This can be the reason to damage your seo. H1 tag is for your main headline. Then you can use till H6 tag. Don't use H1 tag several times in your post. If used once then the next that you will use will be H2 then H3 and till H6.

It helps your seo if used correctly, if not it harms.

Heading Tags not damage your website website, but as said by gknugurlu, not using any heading ( mainly H1) in access number of times. And i think you using H1 in more than one place, so that they tell him to remove the H tag.

If you are using unnecessary H tags then it may be harmful for your website ranking because unnecessary use of any technique considered as Black Hat SEO.

It not true if you over optimize your webpage by adding H1, H2, H3, than it may hurt you. But normally Google itself recommend you to add heading in H1 tag.

One of you seems clueless, but I'm not quite sure who. I've seen several harebrained schemes of using headings improperly for formatting sliders and other content in a way they shouldn't be used. But even fixing those has never involved getting rid of headings entirely.

As a SEO I'd tell the web developer to get his/her act together. As a web developer I'd politely tell the SEO to sod off. I've done both in the last couple of months.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

H tags HELP your website, they don't harm it... Unless you overdo this. One H1 tag is enough for your main keyword in ONE page! And maybe a few (2-3) H2 tags, don't need to use other H tags!

If your site needs more than one h1, it's not problem. People just
don't have a clue, so you get this crap.

And if your site looks dumb with an h1 size heading...

You do not need any heading tags depending on the situation.

The reason he wanted you to remove the h1 tags is because you used h1 tags for styling purposes, not SEO purposes. So the SEO guy wanted to have his own h1 tags in the content. You really shouldn't use h1 for styling purposes in your css classes unless it's a title of an article or title of a blog. I've seen some people style the phone number in an h1 which is pointless.

I'm trying to decipher the OP.

Add a single <h1> tag per page that you want to be used as an alternative SERP title, Google will sometimes pull the <h1> tag text as a SERP title.

If you need additional <h> tags on the page use <h2> tags, forget everything else (<h3> - <h6>).

ONLY use <h> tags on important keyword phrases, do not use <h> tags for things like Login, Subscribe, Follow Me, etc..., those types of words are useless as far as SEO. Style those words that are useless for SEO with CSS If needed, font size, etc... (for traffic eyes).
