Warrior Forum is great to find answers, but the problem is how to determine which answers are the right for you.

And to be honest I don't think that there is one and only keyword research method.
I'm always trying to adjust to specific project type.

Here are few things that might help you choose the right keyword research process:
    1. What kind of websites you are trying to build? Big, small, vertical, horizontal?
    2. What is your backlinking strategy? SEO competition analysis should be adjusted for your BL "power".
    3. What you have chosen for you monetization strategy?
    4. Have you already chosen specific niche, or would like to create websites with specific theme in mind (like review websites) in many niches?

When doing keyword research, don't go directly to Google keyword planner. Brainstorm keyword ideas as many as possible first. Then use the tool.

Another killer tip is using “Searches related to…” feature of google. After entering your seed keyword into google, scroll to the bottom of the page and take a look at the “Searches related to…” for that keyword. You can find some related keywords. And you can take one of those keywords, repeat the same process again to get more related keywords. After repeating this process for several times, you can get a big list of keywords. Then put the list into keyword planner to check out the search volume.

These are good points mostly because most people don't "bother" to do them and they pay the price.

One additional thing is to ensure that the keyword phrase has commercial intent as ranking one without that is pretty much a waste of time.

      Regards

For keyword research follow the below steps
    1) Competitor analysis
Check your competitors website to see what keywords they have used and which keyword is ranked high.
    2) Keyword planner
Use keyword planner to see the variations of the selected keyword. You can also see the avg monthly search and competition of a particular.
    3) Keyword selection
Select keywords whose avg monthly search is high and competition medium or low. You can also select a high competition keyword if there are no options available.

    Hope it helps

Apart from this, before finalizing keywords make sure you can rank your website in Google first Page for that particular keywords? Is there any website on first page, which you think or believe, you can replace them with your website?
Answer is Yes? Go for it then.

Keyword research simply tells you the amount of traffic to expect from your chosen keyword.

Keyword competition tells you the possibility of ranking for your term within a stipulated period while ranking your keyword on the SERP is a different ball game entirely which involves BL..
