Checking website data with ahref

Okay this is where i am totally stuck and i cannot get my head around. I am a newbie at this game and really only starting out and have a few questions.

Let's say for example i put www.g oogle.com into ahrefs. It tells me it has 60k backlinks but only has 150-200 referring domains. Can i still outrank this? I watched a video where a guy told us that it does not matter about how many backlinks they have it's all about getting referring domains. This has seriously confused me as i do not understand that. How can i outrank somebody with 60k backlinks in only a few months, this is not possible to me?

Also you can only check links like www. g oogle.com in ahrefs, what if there is links like (FOR EXAMPLE): uk.answers.yahoo.com/blablablabla and things like that, how do i know that i can outrank them when i cannot check on it's data?

Can somebody explain a bit more how this works, how can i estimate who i can and cannot outrank and give me a run down on why i should need more referring domains than backlinks.

Sorry if i am not explaining this very good but i am trying!!

      3. If you want to get backlinks on referring pages then start creating social media accounts for your site like facebook fan page, twitter, pinterest etc.
      4. For now, don't focus on how to outrank your competitor instead focus on optimizing your site.

Thing is though, if i find a profitability keyword that i want to rank for and i find other sites using that same 'keyword' with x amounts of referring pages then why would i waste time trying to rank or that keyword to get #1 spot on google when it's never going to happen.

My problem is, i can not look at that data and tell from x amount of referring domains that i can beat it or i cannot.

This is my problem. If i look at a site and it has 100/200/300 referring domains etc how can i estimate if i can outrank them and how long it would take me if i was to do it.

      This make sense?
