Nowadays you can see lot of articles that this is "bad" practice, but anyway, people / agencies do it. Sometimes is more valuable to get visitors that way then link juice, depends.

To prove my point - you can find few WordPress themes sites out there, that offer theme sponsorship. Basically, you pay them to put your link in the footer, they release theme on their site, and those themes are massively downloaded, and generate plenty of links. If they still do it, it means it works, no matter what Google and "experts" say. Anyway, follow the links from themes, see rankings, that's the best answer.

I have many sites that have Powered by, designed by, installed by, setup by, etc.

I have found in google and bing that when I have done searches for my main domain that these links came in with my search. It doesnt happen over night but they are found and added. about 75% are found,

So I think its a good thing!

In my view it is still a good practice simply because it will bring a lot of real traffic on your websites and its a good thing to have .

I personally don't use footers, I create a header with the links I want, in my experience that works better, the footer links power have had a reduce effect in my experience.

Footer links are the lowest of the low. In 2014, anything there is almost useless.

Google doesn't like those types of links when used for ranking pages but they still work.

I find it hard to believe a paying client would want your link (any service provider link) anywhere on their site.

Google refers to the practice of "Widely distributed links in the footers or templates of various sites" as a link scheme which goes against their Webmaster Guidelines.

If you don't get a manual penalty for it, you run the risk of getting algorithmically caught by Penguin.

I have a few site wide footer links to same niche external sites which IMO is probably how I get away with not having any problems. I think niche relevancy between the two sites is the key.

Actually, I left out an important part of the definition which was that they are referring to "links that weren't editorially placed or vouched for by the site's owner".

So if they look like they're editorially placed you shouldn't have any problem at least with manual reviews - although I sometimes wonder if algorithms can always tell the difference.
