Here is what is probably a stupid question, but I will ask it anyway. I was looking into using the Google Keyword Tool and found it replaced with another Google tool to help pick adwords. I have heard that Google has stopped updating its list of keyword searches. So it would seem that to do SEO you are going to have to use another source that Google if you want current results. So if that is true, what data are the services providing SEO advice using, if it is not Google data? And as a layman, I wonder how effective it is compared to the Google data that used to be used.
What data is SEO based on?

OK thanks for this, Edward Smith.
