Amazing way to get HUGE numbers of backlinks!

OK, so this isn't new, but it's such a powerful way of getting large numbers of backlinks to your site that I thought I'd raise it again for those who haven't seen it.

I was looking around Open Source Web Design - Download free web design templates. the other day, and saw a design I wanted to use. I clicked on the link in the footer, so see the designer's site.

This turned out to be a very simple "Coming soon" affair, with no text, and only a couple of links, to a contact form and a free templates page.

I was somewhat surprised to say the least to see that the Google toolbar showed a PR of 8! I checked the backlinks, and Google showed OVER SEVENTEEN THOUSAND incoming links!

The designer had given his/her designs away free as templates, but had left a small link her to his/her site. All of those small links had added up, and given the site a huge PR.

The sad part of it is that this designer obviously doesn't have a clue about IM, as the anchor text was their domain, which no-one would search for anyway, and their site had absolutely no money-generating method at all, but the point is that they achieved a huge PR with a very simple method.

Imagine what they could have done if they had used a keyword-rich anchor text?

This is very easy, and can be done by pretty much anyone with a bit of imagination. You can outsource web site templates, Wordpress templates and all sorts of other things, making sure to leave your link in the footer. Add the template to the right directories, and you have a free, ever-expanding source of incoming links!

As I said, this is not a new idea, but I think there's a lot of unused potential in this one, and I wanted to bring it up again in case anyone hadn't stopped to consider the immense benefits this can bring.

Hope it helps someone

Tis an interesting one alright - goes to show how "giving", providing value and taking action have beneficial results.

Shame the developer in question isn't aware as you said.

Perhaps you should have a word in their ear and suggest a joint venture which has a winwin for both of you.

    All the best,
    Tom

I just mentioned about Anchor text and it's effect.

Really it only has a short term effect, in the long term it's all about onsite optimization.

Do you have anything to back that up? I have two words for you that prove that statement wrong. "Click Here"

Type those two words into your Google search bar and look at the #1 result. It is Adobe. It has been for as long as I can remember. No matter how the search engines algorithms change, Adobe is always #1 for the keyword "Click Here".

But look on the page. The words "Click Here" do not appear anywhere on the page or in the source code. The word "Click" doesn't even appear. If I remember correctly, the word "here" does once, but that would not help the ranking.

Adobe has had that ranking for years because it has thousands of people linking to it with "Click Here" in the anchor text. There is no onsite optimization for that keyword. None whatsoever. Yet Adobe has held that ranking solidly for years.

I thought Google regards this as blackhat. If the designer links to his designer website it´s okay. But if you use free templates for linkbuilding to affiliate sites it´s not.

  • Sponsoring templates is usually a short-lives surge of backlinks though, because when a better template comes out, or as the users that use them fail out/redirect their websites most, if not all of those backlinks are gone, but yes, if they knew about anchor text they could certainly have capitalized on a great opportunity.
