What's up with outbound links? Do they help?

I'm not an SEO guy per say. But I do want my sites to rank and rank well.

While doing some reading earlier I hit an article on outbound links and that a few of them that are topical in nature and go to non competitive sites actually is good for the outbound linking sites optimization, and help it rank better.

I would think that it would lower the internal link juice being passed internally by bleeding it to the site the outbound link was going to. I guess a no follow tag would stop that.

Does out linking to other sites really help?

I've been googling and reading about it but was curious if any of the big dogs that post here had any thoughts or opinions on it.

Does it help?

Have you ever done it and noticed a change that correlated directly to placing the outbound link?

I'm not nit picking or anything. I'm wondering though if there's any "proof" that it works to increase rankings. Maybe somebody has done a case study?

This is something that's been discussed and talked about for ages, and there has never been any factual evidence confirming it's validity.

Honestly if it does help it helps minimally, it's like debating whether or not bolding your keywords will help rankings.

I wouldn't waste a ton of time on worrying about this.
