Hey guys,

Just getting into the silo structure and I got one main question.

For example I want to rank on the word 'cheap booze'. I really think that I can rank on that keyword because serps are not really competitive.

So if I want to make a silo about cheap booze, whats my lay-out going to be.

I got like 2 examples:

1. Navigation bar with cheap booze that goes to a page about cheap booze. A 1000+ word article because I want to rank this page in top 10 serps. Then add relevant articles beneath this page like www.domain.com/cheap-booze/booze-for sale and www.domain.com/cheap-booze/booze-shops. Then these 2 articles/blogs are linking to my overall page about cheap booze.

2. Same as above but then the overall page is not optimalized for SEO just for customer. Then all the other blog post link to an 'salepage'. This page is optimalized for cheap booze.

So do you need to go down with your blogposts in categories en link these to your top level page of that silo. Or do you make a silo and link all pages to a product/sales page that is not already displaying in this silo.

Im a little bit confused.

PS sorry for bad english, im dutch.

You're confused for sure If your keyword is cheap booze & your goal is writing 1,000 word articles with hopes of ranking your money page. Use product descriptions not articles for on-page content. The keyword cheap booze would be a keyword for an eCommerce site, not some keyword stuffed article directory.

The silo setup is straight forward, stay focused on the subject, remove all irrelevant clutter (internal links/text, misused <h> tags, etc...) & keep the internal links focused on the main keyword subject.

Dont create: www.domain.com/cheap-booze/booze-for sale and www.domain.com/cheap-booze/booze-shops.

... where booze is used twice. You're setting yourself for overoptimization.

    Try: domain.com/cheap-booze/for-sale

    ----

But to answer your question about how you want to do the linking: Just rank which ever page gets the most searches. For example, if 'cheap-booze' gets 1000 visitors, and 'cheep-booze-for-sale' gets 2000, send all the internal linking to the for sale page. And vice versa.

There have been couple of good threads on siloing. Forum search is probably still broken, so try the Google search.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

        Thanks for answering my question!

Im still confused about the 'salespage'.

Is the salespage the page where your keyword is in, or is this just a salespage where you are linking to from an article that is optimized for your keyword.

        So lets say cheap booze:

        1. Salespage optimized for tablet offers
        2. Random article optimized with the keyword tablet offers and from this article you link to your salespage.

I really think the first one, but just need some confirmation so I can set-up my new website the good way!

OK, I have to admit I'm not at all sure what you are referring to regarding "sales page"

Siloing usually refers to a site architecture where you have a 3 or 4 levels deep setup

I build sites using 3 levels:
    home page (primary search phrase)
silo landing pages (secondary search phrases)
    article pages (tertiary search phrases)

You need a minimum of 3 silos landing pages, and a minimum of 5 articles per silo - so you're talking of about 20 pages when you add the mandatory pages such as privacy, contact, terms, etc.

In addition you need a navigation system that does not link any of the articles in a silo, to any articles in a different silo - i.e. the silos must be water-tight - this can be done with a dedicated wordpress silo plugin, if you use wordpress

It can also be done Wikipedia style - with no navigation menu - just in-content hyperlinks to the relevant pages - you can do this manually

I always use LSI keyword discovery - so here is an example of what you could have for the level 2 keywords:
    cheap booze brands
    cheap liquor
    cheap alcohol
    cheap booze online
    cheap vodka
    cheap booze cruise

You would then take each of the above, and find 5 sub-keywords of each - these would then be the article titles for each silo

This is far more complex than what you outlined - but this is the minimum for siloing effectively

      Allright,

I need to delete the main menu because these counts as links to an opposed silo. So if people came up on a page they only can see pages for that silo.

Another real example for like tablet offers as my secondary keyword phrase.

I will make a silo with the top page about tablet offers. then I link in this article to a page called ipad offers, samsung offers, microsoft offers etc.

I added a screenshot in the attachment, please help me.

Looking at the graphic, that's a 4 levels deep silo site architecture:
        home page
        silo landing page
        sub-silo landing pages
        articles for sub-silos

I build 3 levels deep silo sites - but for this example it's OK

There are many different ways to do it, but on an article page, I show links to the other articles in the same silo, the silo landing page of the articles in the silo, the home page

The one thing all the different methods of siloing have in common, is that you don't link to articles in another silo - that's the main thing that will kill a silo site
