What program to use to check my google rankings?

How does that work with local clients/keywords?

Even web based apps would be running off the server GEO location, so If the app server is in Houston (example), how would it give accurate SERP tracking for Atlanta when tracking local keywords? I can't imagine local proxies being easy to manage.

You can define your location in Google search to see the search results from those locations. It's under the search settings.

The tools just take advantage of that.

I know about the search setting on Google SERPs, but I still have doubts that's accurate. If I'm on the east coast checking local keywords on the west coast, I just have a feeling people that are on the west coast would see more accurate SERPs based on their GEO location. Google still knows the searchers GEO location (ISP/server GEO location) where the search is originating from.

I've tested it quite a bit using proxies as well as friends in other locations. Their location setting is pretty spot on.

As far as the rank tracking programs, the ones I mentioned do a pretty good job of finding local rankings. And you can see drastic differences if you have them check the rankings for just standard Google.com versus setting a specific location like Baltimore, MD.

I've been wondering about this too. I'm using proxies that are from Europe, but none form my home country. Most results seem to be fairly accurate, but there's a couple of keywords that seem to be about 5-10 positions off if you compare to checking with incognito browser.

I'm just curious, doesn't really matter. As long as the results are consistent and accurate enough.

Being off something like 2-3 SERP positions can be a big deal as far as traffic volume. IMO, it does matter.

You're right, it can be important. Most keywords I'm tracking have hilariously low search volume because Finland. I just don't happen to need more accuracy right now, but that might change in the near future.

Advanced Web Ranking does seem to be fairly accurate with my own SERP results. Exactly +- two positions for my own site, except for the one keyword that it doesn't find at all (should be in 80-100 range). However, for another site and another set of keyword AWR gave results that seem so inaccurate that I'd have hard time trusting it.

I usually use Rank Tracker, but mostly because it's been faster and more stable.

Just noticed - Google has finally decided to add my authorship mugshot to the SERPs. That took a ages. I guess I'm now like a celebrity or something.

  Some have reported lower click through rates with this addition. I've had a couple of people tell me during workshops when I bring a search result up on screen "I haven't clicked on those because I thought they were videos."

  It may seem like a counterproductive thing to do, but I'm actually going to keep my face there in any case. Most of my jobs don't come from my site, and I see that image as a way to brand myself.

I use proranktracker(.)com, it use to be free in the early days when in beta, but now they charge monthly fee. Rankings are accurate and they deliver reports to your inbox.

I was going to suggest this too. It's still free up to a point. I think 100 keywords? Which for most people is more than enough.

I use the Rank Tracker plugin in Scrapebox and it works pretty well if you've got the proxies.

Here's the thing with rankings, in some markets and niches they are very fluid. I tell my clients we should pay attention to trends in rankings more than the exact ranking. If I check a ranking at 9:00 in the morning, I might see the site at #5. At 3:00, it might be #4, and at 7:00 I might find it back at #5. All in the same day.

Don't get hung up on rankings so much versus the overall trend of things going upwards or downwards. Besides, if it is something where you are targeting a national or worldwide audience, your rankings are going to vary so much from town to town, state to state, and country to country... You could drive yourself nuts trying to get a real handle on it.

I know what your saying but I have some ranked pages that are solid #1 regardless of the time of day they're searched (running CCleaner/Incognito), not necessarily local keywords though I'm heading in that direction. The only country I check is US, If other countries rank, fine but I don't usually check that stuff.

I was more interested in the accuracy of 3rd party tracking in general, example, I don't want a 3rd party app hosted on a UK server telling me local SERPs for Atlanta, GA (US).

Just keep in mind that most tools won't show your rankings so accurate. Go check with at least 3 tools and don't forget to check manually for at least one or two keywords!
