I assume this means that people naturally link to my website.
Aside from content, are there any better ways to achieve this?

It's actually really hard to get people to link to my content which generally gets quite a few likes/ shares, what am I doing wrong?

The best way to get more shares and likes from your content is to make them interactive.

You need to write like you are physically talking to your reader. This gives you the opportunity to ask if they agree with you, are on the same page with you or have a different view of the subject.

Another solution is to always include ancillary content.

I recently had this experience. I googled up some topic, and found more information than I needed. I got so elated that I just looked for the opt in form and subscribed because I knew this guy was rare.

If your readers know you to be a caring content provider, they'd naturally be more interactive.

Find social media groups that are in the same niche, join forums and become an active member there.

Research sites that are in your niche or a similar niche and offer a guest post.

If you want to do it naturally you will need to start creating relationships with people and be active on forums and social media

'Natural' linking... What this means to me by definition is that links are created by others.

What this means to an algorithm is an entirely different story. The latest things that Google likes to see is:

      - Diverse anchor text diversity. A good mix of branded (~25%), URL (~25%), misc (~5%), topic (~30%), and keyword/synonym rich anchors (20%). <- Heavy emphasis on synonyms.
      - A steady link velocity. Not 100 backlinks in one day. Not even 10/day for newer sites. What they want is a steady stream of incoming links that is appropriate for the domain age and the social signals the site is receiving.
      - Social signals. Any site that is receiving backlinks should also be getting tweeted about, or facebooked. Social bookmarks as well.

Now whether or not you're taking link building into your own hands, or relying on others to 'naturally' create backlinks for you... the same things can go wrong. There is nothing stopping random people from linking to your site in mass one day. It's unlikely, but its still possible. Likewise, nothing is stopping anyone from all linking to your site with the same anchor text. Again, unlikely but still possible. Real sites that are use white hat techniques still get penalized all the time.

For myself, I'd rather take my SEO efforts into my own hands and keep fine control over all these factors. And like you said, waiting for people to 'naturally' build links for you... I simply don't have the patience for that. I'm trying to make money today.

  • It means your content is so good that other people share your link. Like how viral videos start and what not.

Natural links are links you don't build, you earn. It's quite simple.
