Question about keywords

I'm not even sure how to phase this question. I'm trying to figure out the relationship between long tail keywords, for example

paint blue widget
paint your blue widget
paint a blue widget
paint blue widgets

Is this 4 keywords, 1 keyword or something else entirely?

If a page ranks for "paint the blue widget", will it possibly rank for the keywords above, and other permutations of those words? If not what are the determining factors?

Any thoughts on the subject are much appreciated.

  • Simple enough, look at the search results Google gives you, how different are they? They are pretty similar, Google can tell that they are similar keywords, and if you rank for one, it is likely that you will rank for the others.
  • A 'keyword' can be more than one word.

So the keyword for my pumpkin carving subniche is 'left handed pumpkin carving tools'. My keyword is made up of 5 individual words.

If I was bidding on a keyword in AdWords the keyword I am bidding on is 'left handed pumpkin carving tools'.

    pumpkin carving tools
    left handed pumpkin carving tools
    safe pumpkin carving tools

    That's 3 keywords.

Each of those keywords contains other keywords. For example, the keyword 'pumpkin carving' appears in all the keywords in my list. So does the keyword 'pumpkin'.

I could start by trying to rank for the easier 'longtail' keyword 'safe pumpkin carving tools'.

Eventually I could build authority and SEO and start ranking for harder keywords that are part of my longtails such as 'pumpkin carving' or 'carving tools'.

  • I believe these 4 key phrases would be almost identical to Google.
    Especially under the Hummingbird update.
And because "a" and "your" are Google stop words, they usually don't change the meaning of key phrase that much, so Google pretty much disregards them.
