Problem: Network Site Outranking It's Target

Hey guys - So recently I set up a small PBN that cost me little for some pretty good domains. I've got the right plugins going, Link Juice Keeper and Spyder, and small unique blocks of content with my keywords.

However, on a handful of keywords my blog network sites are outranking my money site.

Any ideas why this is? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance!

I would get rid of Link Juice Keeper and Spyder Spanker. Both are bad ideas as they create footprints, in my opinion. I would rather edit the .htaccess file manually, then let Spyder Spanker put its big neon sign in my .htaccess files. That is another topic though.

As for your problem, it just means you bought a few good domains. In that situation, I would either keep building links until the situation changes, or I would consider turning those domains into money sites themselves if the keywords are profitable.

It's a good problem to have.

That's something new to me Mike. You mean we should remove LJK and SS from our network? I thought SS helps to protect our footprint?

Maybe you/I should open a new topic on what you do to edit the .htaccess file. It will be interesting for us to know.

Spider Spanker just helps to hide your backlinks from other SEOs. Personally, I only place it on my money sites.

Mike also pointed out a blessing you have in disguise: turn the PBN into a money site. These days I never build a new site from a brand new domain. The advantage than an aged domain has over new ones (especially if they have a clean backlink profile) is downright unfair.

It never hurts to have sister money sites. At any given time, Google can start to 'dance' a site, especially if its new. Hedge your bets and create sister sites that target the same keywords.

Link Juice Keeper I can understand getting rid of since you can replace it simply in the htaccess file. SS I may have trouble figuring out how to rewrite in htaccess easily.

The footprints aren't that big of a deal, though, atm. Each site is on it's own A-class IP, the content is 100% unique, they don't link to each other, and Whois is private. It'll be something to explore once I have this little rank glitch sorted.

Thank you very much! I wondered if it was the content - Google's been keen to like topic pages, and I think the content on each site is a bit too "topic relevant" if you know what I mean... it has to be relevant, obviously, but I still have to learn not to write optimized blurbs on my network; As I say, I'm relatively new to PBNs.

I may do that eventually, although my money site in this market has been very, very stable for a while now. The pages that are ranking aren't doing the Google dance, either. They've opened on like page 4 or 5, and over a week or two have climbed - gradually - to #1 or #2. Other pages for higher competition keywords in this major locality have also begun to rank - pages I've created simply for content; feature articles on very generic keywords.

You still want the backlink page relevant to the money site/page but you need to throttle the exact keyword on the backlink page down to only the one instance of the keyword anchor-text link pointing at the money page/site.

It doesn't even matter that it's a PBN site/page, it works the same way with internal pages.

Gotcha. I understand relevance, what I mean is I fall into the trap of writing content as if I'm trying to rank the site it's on. To me, I kind of see a difference between relevance and optimization.

This is very simple to fix. I assume your PBN page/s mention the target keyword, If that's the case all you have to do is remove every instance of the [exact] target keyword from the domain/page that's providing the backlink, except for the anchor-text on the PBN backlink/s. This also works for swapping out ranked home pages for internal sales pages. Basically piggybacking off existing authority pages with multiple internal pages. So If you had 1 authority page you could swap out ranked positions in the SERPs with multiple internal sales pages for a few different/relevant keywords in the SERPs, more bang for your buck while split testing sales pages.

Where do you guys buy domains for reasonable prices, Flippa or somewhere else, too?

How much are you usually willing to spend on a single domain?

    Off topic but here goes.

I look for branded domains, not EMDs. I start in RegisterCompass and check each one using tools like Majestic. I don't automate any part of the process. yet. Ex-political sites are usually great; they have clean profiles, .EDU or .GOV links, and good trust.

Three weeks ago I picked up a PR3 with a very nice profile and stuff for $30, but that's very rare. My network is small, 6 sites or so composed of two PR1's, three PR2's and one PR3. It does me pretty good, actually., and cost me under $250 (realistically probably well under $200 but I'm being generous), including hosting. I can't hit big keywords, but I don't want to. Then again, I'm currently ranking a good keyword in a major metropolitan area using only two of the links... it's a high-end market and I'm hoping to rent the entire site for $1-2k/month, eventually, considering each lead could potentially bring around ten grand.
