Keyword research and competition analysis

Hello,

For my sites in the UK I would like some advices on the best way to do keyword research and competition analysis. I would like to have a tool to allow me to check how tough it's going to be to rank for a keyword with its competition.

For the keyword so far I've found :
keywordeye (free)
wordtracker (27$ / month)

Competition analysis
Traffic Travis (free)
Majestic Seo (free plan)

I would like to know if you have any suggestions and if free solutions (such as keywordeye + majestic seo) are enough to start.

  • Secockpit and long tail pro are both great tools.

    Mozilla firefox also has an option that can be used to showed page ranks on competition.

    • If you want to be safe when researching domains to buy, you need to pay for a Majestic membership because the top ten results won't give you nearly enough information.

      A case in point happened to me a couple weeks ago. I found what looked like a tremendous domain and research told me me it was looking pretty good, but in the historic index on like page 15 it was sex, gambling, and drug links from then on.

      You can't be afraid to spend a bit on a couple good tools - provided they support your strategy of making money. I'm not one for buying every plugin and service under the sun, but Majestic (or Ahrefs, or SEOMoz) is pretty much vital. I prefer Majestic, but some love the other two.

  • empire flipper's free report (with signup) has some decent information on first page competition analysis. personally I do all mine manually (although longtail pro is much fsater). Look for keyword in the url, keyword in the description, site name, page and domain authority of everyone in the top 10...fairly basic stuff. However "how hard" it will be to rank is subjective. Someone with a 20+ site PBN can rank sites a heck of a lot easier than someone that has to go out there and hustle links.

      That is all you need for free tools

      Then make yourself a list of keywords from any keyword collector

      Go to Google Search and look at the actual organic search results for each keyword

      Don't waste your time using keyword planner data this is an adwords tool

      Was never designed for organic search a good stat but wrong metrics

      As far as I am concerned keyword planner is dead and new metrics are needed to be successful
      this is why SEO went down the tubes old methods sank many websites and SEO businesses

      Especially with Hummingbird and the semantic web

  • trying for top SERP's with "free" is going to be a waste of time, may I suggest a long tail keyword and while tools are great, you really dont need to do that many keyword searches to see that competing for "free" is probably going to be a waste of time, no one really searches for "free" all by itself I dont guess.

  • I am using Long Tail Pro for keyword researching as well as for keyword analysis. It's a great tool that tell you about the competition of your keyword.
  • Any tool that farms the Google Adwords Keywords Tool isn't giving you the full picture. This includes some of the biggest KW tools mentioned in this thread.

    • If you are beginning, go for low volume terms. If you try for hard terms, you more than likely will not understand how to rank at first and you will think SEO is just not doable.

      Go for something easy at first. Something super easy. Make sure you see Yahoo Answers, article sites, press releases, etc. Even some low volume keywords can have tons of keywords.

      Market Samurai is also a great tool. It is free for keyword research. The paid version will give you a small overview of the competition. Check it out.

  • Just use Google Keyword Planner for keyword and competition analysis.

    It doesn't matter what tool you use to choose the right keyword. The most important thing to have a good rank in Google just the way how you build a link to your site. Try to learn the best way on how to build a good strategy of backlink campaign.
