Language meta tags on Wordpress site

Hi,

I have a website in a couple of different languages. For example site.com is in English, site.com/de is in German, and site.com/se is in Spanish.

My guess is that it would be better for my German rankings if I specify the language to be German, right? And the corresponding for the English and Spanish part. Would this be good SEO wise (I mean for ranking for German searchers, Spanish searchers, etc.)?

Any simple way to add this definition to Wordpress, any plugins, etc.?
If I can handle this without having to edit header.php I'd prefer that, so that I don't loose via updates (or updating child themes).

Thanks.

Best regards,
Thomas

I would recommend hosting the website in the country where you are trying to rank. Then work from there.

It is, as well as to have the anchor texts in the language you want to rank for even if the overall content is in english, but yes having metas in the language you are looking to rank definitely makes a difference

    Thanks, guys.
So if I just add the meta tags for the language of the page that should work (and improve my results)?
My site is hosted in the US. Is there a way to tell google that the site in German is actually for German visitors?

    Cheers,
    Thomas
