Hi all,

Need a bit of advice. I found a domain that is expired and is related to one of my existing website. It already has inbound links to the expired domain.

I'm looking at purchasing this domain and redirecting it to the existing domain. What is the best way of doing it or create totally new content?

Is it best to setup the fowarding as 301 with masking?

You should inspect this website very well. See how good this website is in the past (web archive is a good tool to use!). Then, be sure to check the Authority, the rankings, PR, backlinks, etc. Then, you can do whatever you want, 301 will work good if the niche is similar to the domain name!

Build the site out & use it to rank multiple pages (relevant links) for your old money site and the new domain your buying. This way you can rank pages from multiple domains for your best traffic keywords & pass traffic back & forth selling similar products/services.

Think of it as a backup plan in case one of you money pages drop in the SERPs. Two ranked pages per main keywords is better than one ranked page.

I'm more on the side of the fence that says build it out as it's own site.

You need some more knowledge to find really good expired domains that are not spammy or penalized by google.

1)Look-up on whois*domaintools*com that the domain does not have more than three registrars and maximal one drop
2)Check on archive*org if any nasty SPAM images appear
3)Check on screenshot*com for the same
      4)Check metrics on Moz*com / opensiteexplorer*org for PA 30+ and DA 25+
5)Check on ahrefs*com anchor SPAM and backlinks
6)Check on majesticseo*com for for BL 25+ and DL 15+

That's all you have to do.

      All the best

        Thanks for the info Dan.

Well I decided to buy the domain yesterday because I thought it was worth it and pointed it to my domain which is only a few months old.

My domain only has a PA of 1 and DA of 1. The expired domain which I purchased has DA 23 and PA 29 so I guess it was worth it.

Ahrefs domain rank is 38 and Backlinks is 1.3k, referring domains is 9 which is better than my domain ahrefs 27, backlinks 50, refeering domains 18.

        majestic seo reported:

for expired domain : 1229 external backlinks, 11 refeering domains, 11 refeering IPs, 11 refeering subnets, 6 trust flow, 9 citation flow

Going through some of the external backlinks the website industry and content is actually related to my own website which I think is perfect for me.

Did I make a bad decision?

@businesslegions: yes I think that domain won't give you much link juice.

      You need at least:

      PA 30+
      DA 15+

      BL >15
      DL >10

lower if any BL are coming from DMOZ or Wiki pages, so than DA and PA increases.

I could check it for you, if you PM the domain name.

      Cheers

I have always been a bit skeptical about buying aged domains. They may work but I think Google is wise to this now. You are probably better buying a new domain based upon your brand.

Either the followed backlinks still exist or they don't, kinda of hard to deny a working link.
