While the map results usually appear above the rest of the results, the normal results display more content to allure the customer. I'm not sure which would be better. Actual location isn't important in this business because we go to the customer's location.

I've been working on getting my sites to come up in map results, but I'd hate it if I lost the normal search result in the process.

Don't over think this out. I have a clients site in #1 position for his keyword and just below that he is first spot for the maps listing then below the maps listings I have his youtube channel showing. All this for his four main keywords.

Yes, as far as I know the OP is correct.

Moz made a huge post about this and a lot of people were talking about it last summer around July / August.

He mentioned how he had a lot of clients who were ranking in G local and organically, and out of nowhere Google started to remove their organic listings but leave their maps.

I also saw a lot of other people talking about this.

I can't say how true it is but I've definitely experienced it myself. Like I had a site ranking #1 in G local and #1 organically. Last August google dropped my #1 organic rankings and left my G local rankings intact.

It confused the hell out of me at the time because it never really looked like my site was penalized. I didn't lose any links. Google just pushed me one day from #1 to pages 5 & 6.

No matter what I did to that site to get it back ranking, Google just keeps my map ranked and will not rerank my website.

I can't say this concretely but I do believe it to be true. Which is the idea that Google doesn't want sites hogging up page 1. I saw the same thing happen to many of my competitors. One guy had 1 map listing ranking and his site was showing twice on page 1. A few months later I saw his site disappear and his map listing stayed perfectly. Just like what happened to me.

I saw him create a second site just to get his organic rankings back. And thats when I decided "I'm going to do the same thing".

What I actually did was -

1) Create a site optimized for G local and rank it in maps.
2) Create a separate site optimized for organic rankings and rank it in the SERPs.
3) Create a 3rd site optimized for youtube. With youtube I upload 100-200 geotargeted videos, then blast them all with GSA and funnel that traffic back to my 3rd site. I didn't want to build this funnel out on any of my first 2 sites encase Google saw all the GSA links on my videos and penalized the site. If it penalized the 3rd site, I don't care cause I'm not trying to rank the site itself, just videos. So I still have my videos ranking, and I get to keep my map ranking and organic ranking with my other 2 sites.

If you really look at the SERPs, you do NOT see many duplicate sites that rank in both maps and organically. They are still out there, but nothing like it use to be a couple years ago.

This is what I'm worried about. I see lots of very strong sites in my niche that only rank for one or the other. And then there are many map listings that barely even have a website, reviews, or google+ page. Can't make sense of it all.

First, stop reading Moz.

Second, OP there's no truth behind that scenario.

I have several local competition where I'm going after the same keywords that they're ranking #1 in organic & #1 in the 7 pack with results also on G maps.

Look at local keywords outside of your own niche.
