Hi and congratulations on the publication of your first site! The first thing to do is to make sure that your site has good on page optimization. Here are some on page optimization guidelines to follow:
    • Home Title Tag: your main keyword should show up twice here, with a variation of that keyword (eg: lose weight and weight loss).
    • H1, H2, & H3 Tags: these tags are very important(especially <H1>), and should always contain your keyword.
    • Keyword Location Within Text: try to place each your keyword near the beginning of the first sentence of each paragraph (maintaining at least 100 words between paragraphs).
    • Keyword Density: you should aim for a density of 3% for each keyword that you're targeting.
    • Use Your Keywords as Anchor Text on your page: link to an internal page on your site, and then link to an authority site (eg: wikipedia) that is related to your keyword. Always remember to use the "No Follow" tag (rel="nofollow") when linking to an external site.
    • Images: use the "alt tag" and rename your images to your chosen keywords.
    • Decorate Your Keywords: bold, italicise, or underline your keyword at least one time.
    • Google Loves Unique Content: your post should be between 850-1000 words and be well structured around your main keywords.

Now, once you've optimized your site, you should focus on creating backlinks that are dofollow, on high PR (Page Rank) pages, relevant to your niche/targeted keywords, and contextual (surrounded by text that is related to your keywords).

One very effective strategy for finding high quality backlinks is by spying on your competitors' sites (those sites that are in the top 3 positions on Google for your targeted keywords). You can do this by using a tool such as SEO SpyGlass or Backlink Watch. Check to see the sources (pages) that your competitors' backlinks are on. If those backlinks are DoFollow and on High PR pages, then you have a winner! Try to get your backlinks on those same pages too! Hope that helps!

100 words between paragraphs? Ignore this. That makes no difference.

Ignore this too. If you are focusing on keyword density, you are doing it wrong. Write good content and don't focus on some artificial numbers.

Why in the world would you use a nofollow tag when linking to an external site? Bad idea. Waste of time.

Another point you should ignore. The length of the content should be what is necessary to cover the topic at hand. If you can do that in 400 words, that's fine. If it takes 2000 words, than it takes 2000 words. Targeting 850-1000 with everything is just plain dumb.

generally thats a good post for a newbie, but I disagree with the nofollow links particularly its crazy IMO to apply nofollow to the most prestigious site in google's eyes like wikipedia

but overall its a good, helpful, and more specific post than you usually get on the internet

  • I'm also a complete advocate of leveraging a cross section of the backlinks your top 10 competing sites used to earn their rankings. However, I do not believe in restricting your backlink profiles to just DoFollow. Does not look natural at all. You also need a natural looking distribution of PR across your backlink portfolio.

Google doesn't give a damn how you get you link, just make it natural and you will be fine.

When building backlinks i maintain these characteristics:

      1. Authority domain
      2. Relevance
      3. Quality content

Every site i publish and drive traffic too is done with backlinks and SEO to rank in search engines like yahoo, bing and google. I'm lazy and outsource all my SEO and Backlinking and focus on what I'm good at. I agree heavily with the thought that counting keyword density is a waste of time and often leads to your site being "STUFFED" concentrate on quality content speaking naturally about your product or service and the keywords will shine on there own. However one tip I have that helps my on-page is to bold the keyword strings (longtails).

It is not illegal per se. I mean, you will not go to jail if someone gets you exchanging or paying someone to build links for you.

Backlink-building is not as simple as it was before. The low-hanging fruits are now somewhat poisoned and might get you sick, very sick or just make you die.
