Google is planning on dismanteling its Google+ platform,
the one all those whitehat "gurus" recommended to be the
social signal foundation of ones SEO campaign

The lesson to be learned from this:

Don´t listen to all the B.S./Hype talk that is always going on in the IM world,
especially if it comes from the so called experts/gurus whatever....

I think the news (or speculation) has been way too sensationalistic. Google+ is not going anywhere, but it's not getting the development resources it's had until this point. They shifted the goals. Google+ is already pretty good in terms of functionality, and heavily tied to several major properties. In my opinion it's not likely that they'd just discontinue the service like all the previous attempts.

Don't disagree with the social signals part.

From what source did you aqcuire the idea that Google was dismanteling it's Google + service? Being the Google has been doing a rather good job integrating its social network into its other flagship services, I find your statement rather difficult to consider true. Google Reportedly Junking Google+ | Mediaite is really the only source I can see this being discussed. Anyone else heard of this?

I know your question is rhetorical in nature, but I'm just going to ignore that. Yes, I do know people who use the service. Not only my random internet contacts, but people I know in real life. The feed in there is not very active compared to Twitter, but it's certainly not "ghost town" either.

It's actually refreshing to have a service where you can sort of keep up with the updates. Reminds me of Jaiku - another social media site that Google slaughtered.

I dislike both "totally failed" and "the best thing ever" camps. World isn't if/else or black/white. So maybe the service didn't meet Google's goals and expectations, but that happens to nearly every service out there. Seldom it's the first attempt at something that will prove popular, and often the iterations just take the company to a whole new direction. It remains to be seen if G+ is successful as a "social layer".

Added: there's also the level that's never going to be visible to us outsiders. One reason for this unpopular power play was to merge your Google profiles under the same account. Better profile information equals more data to sell to advertisers, or more money to ask for better targeting.

G+ has been fudging numbers for a while.

They consolidated all the old blogspot profiles & all the old Google Friend Connect profiles into G+, I'm sure that was to BS Google stock shareholders into believing G+ was popular.

Reminds me of all the dead people casting votes in Florida.

No offense, but if you were buying into the hype IM'ers were throwing out there about Google+, that's on you. Don't blame others.

And to be honest, outside of local SEO, I never heard an SEO I would trust proclaim that Google+ (or social signals for that matter) was important for an SEO campaign.

It's like SPAM, it will be sold 50 years after the expiration date. It's still good, you just have to scrape the crust off with a butter knife. :p

I don't think Google+ is going anywhere, like people have already said, they've made it the center of all their services and have pushed it heavily for quite some time now.

Even if the "gurus" as you say try to push social signals as a way to get better rankings, IMHO you should see it less as an SEO tool and more as a communication tool (although in my opinion users usually prefer Facebook or Twitter, personally I think G+ is quite worthless).

I don´t think they´re going to close down G+ after all the work they´ve put to it. Besides, even though is not as big as Facebook and Twitter, it still has users in the millions.

Its 27th April, Google Plus is up and running. Only change is that its creator resigned from the company.
