Advise Request

Hello Warriors;

A client of mine has a site with about 10k backlinks, mostly redirected to the home page.
About 75% of anchors are branded and they come from variety of very reliable sources such as wikipedia, techcrunch, prnewswire, and even sites reuters & wall street journal! 30% of backlinks are no follow
Now my problem: Majestic says the trust factor of the domain is 25 & citation flow is 35
Also other tools such as MOZ suggests the domain authority is like 50.
The site is totally legit and as far as I know, they never had any backlinking in place. So all organic. On site SEO is relatively good with balances usage of keywords and good title, description, image alt, video, etc.
For a given keyword, the site is in third page of Google and sites above it are not even close to this one. I ran many reports and comparisons and totally confused. Any suggestion or hint?

Thanks warriors again!

  • Majestic and Moz have 0% influence on where a site ranks in spite of what there metrics say.

Personally I don't put much faith in Moz's DA/PA metrics, you can send 100% pure spam backlinks to a site and it will eventually bump up the domain authority.

It's impossible for anyone to answer your question without analyzing the site, the competitiveness in search, and what your competitors are doing. Any answer would just be a shot in the dark which is probably why there isn't any answers here.

It's possible that his "natural link profile" could have been the catalyst for an algorithmic penalty at some point.

Did the site lose rank? Or was it just never there.
  • It was just never there. I have been able to make some improvements, specially for internal pages, but not for the home page and that is what drives me nuts.
What sort of info you may need me to provide to get a better picture here?
  • I'd run a site:domainname check to see how many pages are being indexed. If you know roughly how many pages there really are it might help with bloat/dupes that kind of thing. Of course if the kw is mega-competitive/branded maybe 3rd page is the right place?
Hard to know more without looking at site.

  • It sounds like the issue is that you don't have well optimized on-site factors and likely the off-site links aren't helping beyond pagerank since they aren't optimized for any anchor text.

First fix the onsite stuff, then move onto creating high quality optimized anchor text links.
  • About 2k pages indexed and site is PR5

After you do the site:domain.com search click through to the last SERP page & look at the number of indexed pages. That page count on the first search page includes pages buried in Supplemental SERPs. What's the page index count on the last Google search page, is it still 2K?

  • Any other advise? Any good source that you recommend for onpage, so I can read and learn more?
  • Any other suggestion?
