Appreciate any and all enlightenment...

Usually the paid themes are bloated with javascript because all the developers/buyers care about is pretty things. Later the buyers try & rank their pretty site.

It's like having a $250,000 2014 Ferrari in a traffic jam, might as well be sitting in a 1992 GEO Metro.

Look for themes with simple plain text/links site navigation & view the text only version of the theme demo (Google Cache text version).

Thanks Yukon...so in other words, the free themes are every bit as good as the paid for SEO provided they meet your criteria?

It depends on the theme. There's thousands of themes & they're all coded by different people, for different reasons (ex: directory, image gallery, blog, eCommerce, etc...).

One thing to look for is the size of the downloadable zip file of the WP theme, the smaller the file size usually means less bloated code. It helps to at least know basic HTML/PHP.

Buy a quick loading and lightweight theme. Get one that allows for easy customization and keeps readers on your site longer (limited ads, proper design, content below the fold).

Free themes work fine, and what I've heard rumored is that responsive themes help.
