I basically taught myself and it did take years until I was at a point of where I felt I had enough experience to deal with companies and websites.

How did you learn?

I also taught myself. With lots of trial and error, you eventually learn what works and what doesn't. However, SEO is constantly changing along with Google's algorithm. So, it is important to always continue learning and educating oneself in the field.

I totally agree. It's hard to constantly learn each new method which arises, but you get used to it after a while.

Self taught. Lots of trial and error. And it's a volatile, ever-changing landscape. Having said that, the simple, fundamental stuff still works.

There are plenty of really good SEO resources around. Sadly, there are about many, many more really, really bad SEO resources around. Learn to distinguish between the two and you'll save a virtual lifetime of frustration and wasted effort.

    Good luck!

I learned about SEO when I realized I didn't need to pay search engines to get my site higher on the SERP. It was an eye opener.

I was promoting a freebie site on forums around 2003, making sure to target keywords, and the site just kept ranking up.

Honestly there is no 'trick' to SEO anymore

Make sure your page is optimized right with proper labels that google can read
    Create really good content
Figure out how to get backlinks
    SEO done.

(Of course it goes more in-depth then that with keyword research, tracking competitors backlinks, etc... But, that's the jist of all you need to know to do good)

I'm self taught mostly. I pay attention to what's working in Google. And just mimic what's working. Aslo I've paid people who are getting results to teach me.

I remember that I started reading a book about Search Engine Optimization, to have a basic knowledge about it. If I am not mistaken I've read Wiley's SEO Bible. And then I decided to take a crash course on SEO in a university near my home. I actually didn't learn a lot from the university but fortunately I was able to get a job as an SEO Link Builder. A good start and experience for me. Until now I am still in the process of learning.

I learned SEO through self study when I realized Adwords wasn't an cost-effective for a digital products affiliate. There were lots of rubbish about SEO in the past few years, so I had to choose the right source of information, mostly free from SEO blogs.

    How did you learn?
Well, what I do is I keep on participating over the webmaster forum, keep a close look on the search engine land posts and let me tell you a secret when you open the search engine land there is a table of SEO which appears on the right side. What I mostly do is I keep on following that table.

I learned by trying and failing. Spending lots of money, creating tons of sites that failed, eventually I created a site that made me a full time income, eventually that site was slapped by Penguin 2, let's just say it's been a hell of a learning process.

I quit my job in 2010 and have been self employed ever since. I've made a ton of mistakes and learned a ton. All in all it's been a hell of a ride and as long as search engines exist I will be ranking sites.

    How did you learn?
A mixture of the warriorforum and working at a corporate job. It's been a rough battle for me, because when I want to share my experience from the corporate world people on here bash at me. Which I get it, everyone wants to own their own business. But I just feel that there are some takeaways from the corporate world that can benefit people here in the WF. Reason why I'm saying this is because I THOUGHT I knew everything from the WF, and there are people here who claim they know everything, but there's more to it.

Anyways, back to the question: I learned from here (WF), and a job, and just through trial and error.

From trial and error, and a whole lot of reading with subscriptions to insider knowledge, but of course I had to keep updated over the years, and to this day still educating myself. It takes a year just to get a good grasp. Like chess it takes little time to learn but takes a lifetime to master.

I am also in the self-taught category. I just dove in about 10 years ago trying to learn the basics, found out I thought SEO is endlessly fascinating and kept going. One lesson I learn again and again is that I don't know everything--just when I think I have a handle on things, I realize there is another ocean to cross.Happily, I really like the ocean.

These days, great place to start with SEO include, Searchenglineland.com, Moz.com, and Google's own Search Engine Starter Guide.

I didn't teach myself, unlike other that have posted above. I learnt a lot about Internet marketing and SEO from the Wealthy Affiliate University. After I cancelled my membership due to certain reasons which I would like to keep to myself, I started reading about SEO on this forum and other IM/SEO forums extensively.

Then I began reading blogs as well, and the rest is history. Learning SEO is easy. It just takes a bit of time learning and much more implementing what you learnt.
