Am I suppose to invest in SEO or should the website boom "naturally"?

Hey warriors,

Pretty new here but would appreciate anything I could get on this. Got a website running about 6 months ago, went all crazy with adding a bit of content for the first month or so, and have slowly been adding to it since then. My traffic comes from where I have authority like YouTube and other blogging sites. Alexa ranking is 8 million, and has been for a while. Am I suppose to get SEO for the long term traffic?

Thanks guys!

I've heard the way SEO works has completely been changed. Google now only ranks the ones with quality content rather than SEO rich content? I don't know if this is a good question, I just know Google changes the way SEO works, so I really always get lost in where I should start with it.

    Hi DieselFit,

Great work on adding the content, that is definitely the first place to start! No point in driving traffic to the site if the content isn't there

What is your website about and what is the end goal? You need a marketing plan to determine where you want your potential customers to go and what you want them to do, before you start going for traffic.

If you want them on an email list, then create a freebie to give away to entice them onto it. And then you can sell off the email list. You would do best to create ads on Google or Facebook to give that away.

If you want them to buy off your website, then you will need to look at long-term SEO. I would say a blog is definitely a MUST! You need to be giving away value to your potential customers on a regular basis to get them to like and trust you, otherwise they won't buy into you!

One you have your end goal in mind, working out your marketing plan to getting there always becomes a lot easier.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for the quick response Christian!

My website is about fitness and starting from zero to hero. I love motivating people, getting them going and love providing that one page of info that is usually found in multiple websites/pages. Like for pulls ups I would explain how to build strength to do the first one, then how to progress from there to the very end.

I'm all about fitness, but still not sure about what I really want people to do. I'm open to anything, but since you've asked me what my end goal is, I've been really confused about it. It's really a blog built on passion but of course I'm hoping to be rewarded for it down the road.

Should I be looking at examples of what other people have chosen for their end goals on their fitness sites? I don't want to have agoal that is generic and has too much competition because then what's the point right?

You will want to do SEO, but be careful about over doing. Natural SEO is what works the best now. Work on writing good content that people want to read about relevant subjects. Set Google alerts for things relating to your keywords and write blog posts about these.

The old SEO tactics like link building and link exchanges dont work as well as they used to and can get you in trouble.

I'm all for adding value to the interwebs, but the problem is this.

It takes a lot of time, and for creatively retarded people like me, it costs a lot of money to create truely great content.

Keyword research data is notoriously inaccurate.
Some keywords just don't convert very well despite having high search volume.
It takes time to rank the page and find out if it's a good keyword selection.

So if I'm targeting a group of keywords for a particular page, I do this.

I build some really cheap and fast content.
    I rank it.
I see what the traffic volumes come in and convert like.

Then I decide whether to pursue that group, and only then invest in the quality and upgrade the page.

    Just my thoughts

I see what you're saying. Test out the sample and see if the market bites. But how do you chase those keywords? Do they come up in a paid program or do you simply Google it on free keyword searches?

My keyword research techniques are my own, but my advice would be to simply look at the competitions keywords are. Most would have done the work for you already, and some might even give you new ideas for easy wins.

What do you mean they woudl have done the work for me already? Like observing other keywords and see what they are missing sort of thing?

          Thanks for the suggestion

Ultimately, you are investing in one way or another. Either you put the time in yourself or you bring in a third party company to help you. Ranking "naturally" isn't real. Even if you are naturally promoting your company, you are still doing some form of linkbuilding and optimizing your website, even if its unknowingly.

If you want to increase your rankings and traffic, then you need to build backlinks to your site. Focus on building links that are dofollow and on high pr pages that are relevant to your niche. A website cannot rank well without backlinks.

If you follow what Google says you suppose to just "create great content and wait for people to link to you" however in the real world you need to actively acquire links in order to compete in search, because your competitors are....

Every product and business needs marketing!

If you have an amazing product and no one can see it, does a tree that falls in a forest with no one to hear it make a sound?

Get your SEO going. You will thank yourself down the road.

Yeah, it's really important to use SEO to build your visibility and rank. As a huge fitness nut myself who moved from swimming to triathlons to heavy compound lifting, I know that the kind of content you're delivering should be seen by as many people as possible - getting in shape really is lifechanging, and if you're really into motivating people you owe it to them to make your site visible . I'd suggest not using a cheap service, especially one that promises any kind of concrete or certain result! Be especially careful with services that claim they can give you X number of views for a low price of 50 dollars etc. There are many reputable and accoladed sites out there - one that I've heard good stuff about is Blue Fountain Media. Of course, check stuff out for yourself and make sure you make an educated decision. Hope I've given you a good starting place.

I've looked at blue fountain but it seems like it's sometihng for a big business or something. I'm just starting out and it doesn't seem like a good choice to spend so much on something like this though just yet.

I should find my end goal though, like how my website would generate income though right?!

That's up to you. I would recommend jumpstarting your SEO campaign rather than waiting. It's really up to you though.

Regardless onsite SEO should be taken care of, don't wait until you see some traction to work on your onsite stuff.

It's possible for a site to just boom, but it doesn't happen often. I would recommend purchasing SEO services or doing it yourself in order to increase traffic and basically help the site in general.

Unless you have a huge marketing budget I suggest you start planning your SEO campaign.

Many famous blogs have started with some heavy SEO campaigns but many few have the courage to confess that...(Zen Habits, SPI, ProBlogger and many others...)

Naturally... its very very hard unless you have real value. Go for SEO and Social Media, for beginners Social Media proved to be easy and powerful. SEO is a professional job, try to hire a professional and trusted company/individual for yourself.

You will more than likely have to spend some money or vast amounts of time if you know how to do it. Which I am assuming you don't, other wise this post would not have been made.

The most efficient way is to buy some high PR links. Plus some social stuff with high PR.

That can be bought. If you want to know more, PM me. But I don't think you have enough posts to do that, I will PM you my email and you can use that if you are interested. If you aren't, just delete it, no pressure.

If you are planning to expand your website's traffic, I don't see why should not you look to do SEO to your website! More importantly you should do the keyword research first if not done already. SEO have changed a lot and more will change in coming days, so you have be prepared for those changes while doing marketing for your website.
At the same time it is good that you are adding content on a regular basis, you need to continue that as well.
