Google Maps / Places Zip Code Listing

Hello Warriors,

Yesterday I received a call from a friend that works as a locksmith who told me that some guy started taking all his work by using Google Maps.

Skeptical at first, I started checking out what he is talking about. So I went myself and typed "Locksmith 33433" I also typed in zipcodes from over 100 mile radius and contact information for his company shows up on the first page (if not the first listing) on every Google Maps / Places area.

As I got more into it this is what I have found,

They constantly change names, phone number and Google+ pages. Almost none of them have an address (only city and state) and almost none of the listings have a website or any webpage except for Google+.

Also, usually Google Places has their own icon looking like the one below.

But their listing have a different symbol, just a circle with a letter in it.

I called Google and the representative acted like everyhting is cool and that nothing seems out of the ordinary. He explained icon differences by saying that the original symbol is for verified addresses and actual locations and the circles as just service areas for these businesses.

Any thoughts?
