URL Syntax - Advice Needed

HI,

I understand the general recommendations for URL Syntax (Protocol://Subdomain.domain.TLD/folders/page ...etc) and have always been convinced that good URL structure is required for strong search rankings.

I have recently begun working with a website who's root directory is two directorys deep, (example.com redirects to example.com/dnc/example/home) and I cannot find any research to back up my claims that we should aim to remove this syntax.

Could this be limiting our SEO efforts? Advice & Opinions needed.
