I am seeing some very unusual movements. I keep an eye on a few niches I work in and a few sites of mine are showing extremely unusual serp movements. Thankfully, the movement is on my side so far, so I am seeing lots of improved ranking.

I hope thats the case for most of you guys as well.

I wonder if any of the most recent "thin-content" penalties have anything to do with this Panda rollout?

Maybe they were internally testing the algorithm, and in doing so identified these low/thin content sites with the new algo before officially rolling it out?

Already thought it was Panda related, like I wrote in one of my other posts.

The focus mostly seems to be on "above the fold".

Whether it are affiliate links or duplicate content in the shape of read more snippets.

Not much difference right now, I think it's rolled out over multiple days (the 10 day row) like usual as I've seen a lot of changes in the past 10 days, today was probably the last day of the rollout and thus they announced it.

Unrelated to this update I have had several potential clients who claim to be having a tough time of ranking and in a good amount of the times they have some very large headers.

Above the fold is supposed to target ads but I seriously doubt google is good at distinguishing.

In other words web design matter more now a days in regard to that issue

Didn't the Adsense team advice to put ads above the fold?

But that's pretty old, and now they are even more strict.

There's some logic to it though, Google attempts to force us to provide value as if we don't provide value people won't read the whole article but click the back button before they've reached the affiliate links at the bottom.

So it's like they offer no choice, unless you pull some tricks like accordion scripts, cloaking or smart coding

We are seeing a 40% increase in traffic in the financial niche - resulting in about 300-350 more unique visitors per day. HOPE when Panda 4.0 has finished rolling out we're still getting these numbers. Like a $2000+ a month raise.

300-350 more unique visitors a day nets you $2000+ per month? I assume that isn't adsense income then?

Like I said - all finance. One merchant pays direct $2.75 a click. One merchant pays $28 an email submit, $41 a phone call, $300 a sale. Lawsuit loans pays $100 a phone call over 1.5 minutes, car loans $9 one page submit. Installment loans $80-$115 per conversion, etc, etc.

Lost our Adsense account 2 years ago, and went into full out panic mode. After a month of chasing down good CPAs, testing, calling merchants direct, etc. we ended up making more than with Adsense.

Adsense IS EASY though. With CPA you have to keep track and you are changing pages when campaigns are dropped or discontinued. More work but your pages are refreshed often, which is likely a good thing for SEO.

One of my sites got hit pretty hard. I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out why though.

It's an old site (online since 1999) that is definitely an authority in its niche. It's not a spam niche. I haven't done any SEO on this site.

The pages that haven't changed much since 1999 still rank #1 for their search terms. 30 pages that I added about 5 years ago that have ranked #1 for their search terms for years have all dropped 4-7 spots in the SERPS. The pages all have decent content too. There is no advertising above the fold on these pages.

      My only ideas are that:

      - the header of each of these pages is pretty big
      - maybe the sites that link to these pages have thin content and got hit which resulted in their links to my site being of less value

I'm going to try a redesign of the header to see if that has any impact.

In the meantime I'll just laugh at that animated pic in the previous post.

Hilarious reading the forums this past two days. Some companies spending crazy money trying to recover from past Panda updates, and now claiming it was all their time, work, and investment that did the trick. Not likely.

All of our sites that were hit by the first Pandas recovered by 30-40% on Panda 4.0 and we did NOTHING as far as making ANY changes to the sites. You hear companies talking about all of their massive recovery work having exactly the same recovery rate as those who did nothing.

When Google hit us with Panda I refused to change a damn thing on our sites because the content was excellent. Bing and Yahoo still liked the sites so we just ignored Google`s bullshit and created new domains to make up for loss of traffic.

Only thing Google taught me with Panda and Penguin is that crap sites can rank quite well, and high quality sites can get buried by the crap. As a result of this update our old quality sites have had a nice recovery, and the new crap sites are doing quite well now as well. All Google did was make a lot of smart and experienced site builders and developers take the time to create massive auto-generated web sites to fill their index with more weak pages.

    So what have they gained?

I have data which disagrees with your statement that the work put into recovery is "not likely" to have helped.

Admittedly I have a small sample size that I'm working with - 9 sites heavily impacted by Panda 1.0.

Of these sites some have so far shown no improvement, and others have had different levels of improvement.

When we look at the levels of improvement for each site they seem to be roughly in proportion to the amount of recovery work over the last 3 years - the sites with the least amount of work had no or little measurable improvement and the sites with the most work show the highest level of improvement. (We deliberately did no work on a couple of sites to use them for reference purposes)

These were all heavily impacted sites - it's possible that other sites like yours had improvements without doing any work because perhaps they were closer to the 'threshold' of gaining improvement and benefited from the bar being lowered by a softer, gentler Panda.

I should also point out that I'm still seeing some Panda like recovery today so the roll-out, or it's interplay with other algorithms hasn't entirely finished yet - so maybe the results will look different in the days and weeks to come.

On the 21st, our traffic was spiking up, but then slipped on the 22nd, 23rd, and up until now. Our metrics are lower compared to what they were before the update. But it's not that extremely low, I guess it's the Google dance. I read in another forum that it can take 4-5 days for everything to settle. I'll see what happens this week.

My site does not depend on Panda 4.0, it depends on 90% of revisiting users!!
However, I seem to receive an increased amount of search engine visitors this recent week... if that is however related to Panda is unknown. It's more likely a result of on-site optimization, especially increasing speed as much, that the site would rank on the fastests of the web!

I honestly think someone should study the amount of man hours caused to be lost through all of this. Depends on what you classify as quality, it's still just a fixed set of rules you have to comply with, really not that hard once you figured it out and cause of that it can be gamed with utter garbage quality sites as long as the parameters match.

Yes, but not only since today, rather since about two weeks I have experienced "Google dances" regarding sites the SEO interests of which I am looking after. Since these engage in organic link building (strictly whihte hat) and assuming, their link growth metrics are faster than overall Internet growth, they should, if anything, risen or "treaded water", however, they bounced back and forth since about a fortnight. As far as I understood, that has been a sign of a pending "full-fledged" algo release and since Panda 4.0 was expected, I see this a normal. All I wonder is when will the dust settle again.
