I have been doing SEO for several years and I know LOTS of things play into factor when it comes to rankings, but what's your thoughts on ranking pages on a high authority websites vs a fairly new website?

I'm thinking about buying an old domain and building links to it, rather than continuing with my fairly new domain. Do you think I have a better chance taking this route?? Seems Panda 4.0 is favoring domains with high authority.

Your question seems the basic as far as I have understood , if you've been doing SEO for years, than sorry if I'm answering wrong.

Ranking a page on an authority site is extremely easy than ranking it on a new one. Although each page has its own rank (PR), still the main page's (homepage's) ranking power impacts that individual page's position in SERPs.

For example if you have a page on any SEO topic and a few backlinks are pointing to it, still a page at Moz with zero backlinks may beat it and that's due to the authority of the site.

And when you've two choices to build a site, either on an old domain or on a newer one, then the link profile of the old domain matters. If it has themed (relevant to the niche of your upcoming site), high quality (permanent) links, then it would be a better option over the newer one. I hope I'm right in some way

Does the old domain have powerful links and content? Then yes.

But take that with a grain of salt because you can rank new domains just as easily in some niches if you have the right linkbuilding power.

Yes the domain has lots of GOOD links. I keep hearing how google is favoring domains with higher authority. Im trying to rank for a specific keyword and the domains on top have some authority but not tons. So I'm thinking a brand new domain is going to have a harder time. Don't you think?

It will definitely be 10x easier to rank a high authority websites. To be called a "high authority" website, they will already have links pointing to them.

When you create a new page in the authority website, the links to the website will be passed down to all its pages (depending on the on page seo structure).

On the other hand, new websites start from a 0 backlink profile.

Well, I would just say opposite of what you have said and there is a reason in saying this because the old domain has a number of backlinks and I don't think that you have got all the time to filter out which backlink is strong or which is weak or spam, even if you do that think about the content of those site I am pretty much sure several other sites have copied their content ( Content is not that big issue here because there are some measures which we can take and Google also give priority to the site..........) while on the other hand as you have purchase a new domain means that no backlinks you can build some authoritative backlink by your own, content would be fresh, design would be new ..... etc this is going to give the new domain a chance to stand out. I know having old domain has its own benefits because users are aware of about the older domain but still I would prefer going with the newer domains as they can be ranked much more easily rather than the older domains.

If you have the budget to buy an old domain with really good PR, backlinks, and reputation online- then go for it. Clearly you have the advantage of being able to rank at your target keywords and the SEO and backlinking campaigns come very easy.

But of course, before buying any existing domain, make sure that the backlinks are all good and not spammy. Always check the kind of links you have for that site.

    Good luck!
