Google Title Comp - What is a good number?

So I use Longtail Pro and as I do my keyword research I continually look for good ratio's between the local searches and the google title comps. But for this discussion set aside how strong the competition is for a second.

I keep cherry picking the low hanging fruit by starting with those keywords that have numbers like 140 local searches and 82 title comp and the keyword is a perfect longtail for me moving up to some that have 1500 searches with 800 title comp.

But what is a really good Google title comp number for your keywords? I tend to see local searches in the 3600+ range with 2800 title comps and I tend to think 2800 is too high. Am I nuts, meaning with a good SEO strategy 2800 would be something you would to see with your keywords?

    You should look out for the keywords with relatively high search and low competition !

    Whoever told you that "title comp" is a good metric to use for determining keyword difficulty is a complete and total moron. It tells you nothing.

    For every keyword, you have 3 competitors. Really high volume keywords, maybe 5. That's where all the traffic goes.

    It does not matter one bit how many listings there are.

    Think of it like a race. If I can beat the third fastest person in the race, does it matter one bit if there are 50 people competing or 50,000 people competing in the race? Nope.

    So if you want to go after a keyword you arent really concerned with the number of title comps - just whether or not you can beat out those at the top - correct?

    I was using the title comps as a way to begin begin to identify potential keywords, avoiding some high higher title comps.

    There could easily be a tough comp. keyword with only 100 unique traffic per month, especially a local keyword. The exact keyword doesn't even have to be in the SERP title to rank a page, it helps but it's not the only ranking factor.
