If I go to the site and put in a keyword..ex."lose weight now" a number of articles appear but what factors make one article appear before another?

I couldn't find a trend in age or title or anything really so what it is? Also, do other article sites work the same?

It appears to be the way Google ranks them. Now, how that is done and what criteria they use is the big question. I'm sure that proper keyword usage and backlinks help though.

In terms of Google ranking, it is:

    1) Title
    2) Keyword Density
    3) Backlinks

Now, here's where it gets interesting....Many times, a new article that has a good title and keyword density will debut at a decent rank among all articles for that keyword phrase. That is why you tend to see a lot of traffic at first for a new article.

However, over time it will start to drop UNLESS backlinks are established. And that also explains why article traffic for articles with no backlinks usually drops shortly after its debut.

That's why it is so important to backlink often until your article starts to solidify into a high enough spot on Google.

Would Digg and Stumble upon be good for backlinks?

Better for indexing, but really you don't have any worries there with EZA articles. They're going to get picked up by Google very very quickly without any social bookmarking. Probably a waste of your time. You're better off getting more traditional backlinks to your articles than going the SB route. I usually have great success using some of Angela's backlinks + EZA articles.

i think that there is a page within Google own documentation that tell you how it ranks pages, that is, what Google likes, and what it doesn't. try looking there....

here is what google says on the topic

When a user enters a query, our machines search the index for matching pages and return the results we believe are the most relevant to the user. Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors, one of which is the PageRank for a given page. PageRank is the measure of the importance of a page based on the incoming links from other pages. In simple terms, each link to a page on your site from another site adds to your site's PageRank. Not all links are equal: Google works hard to improve the user experience by identifying spam links and other practices that negatively impact search results. The best types of links are those that are given based on the quality of your content.
In order for your site to rank well in search results pages, it's important to make sure that Google can crawl and index your site correctly. Our Webmaster Guidelines outline some best practices that can help you avoid common pitfalls and improve your site's ranking.
Google's Related Searches, Spelling Suggestions, and Google Suggest features are designed to help users save time by displaying related terms, common misspellings, and popular queries. Like our google.com search results, the keywords used by these features are automatically generated by our web crawlers and search algorithms. We display these suggestions only when we think they might save the user time. If a site ranks well for a keyword, it's because we've algorithmically determined that its content is more relevant to the user's query.

As said before, Google likes relevant and recent articles so it will give them love until someone else writes another article with similar keywords etc. Use backlinks to boost your article performance but only to your best converting article (i.e. the one that gets the most clicks).

If this article works really well, rinse and repeat the formula by submitting similar articles and similar titles. When you've exhausted these ones, move on to your next best article and do the same.

The EZ search engine is just a Google custom search tool, which means that the articles are ranked in the way Google places them.

Are you talking about why Ezinearticles gets better rankings, because that's a matter of page trust.
