Should I No Index thousands of pages?

Hi all,

I have not been around here for a while, had a hell of a lot going on!

My website has over 8000 pages, most of which are product pages, the problem is the content on each page is minimal, in some pages 20 words.

Before anybody tells me to increase the content, due to the type of business around 20 products are added daily, which would make it impossible.

What should I be doing with these products? Should I be Noindexing them? Advice please!

Thanks again
Owen Smith

Why not add content to SOME of the major products pages? That's not impossible. You can hire a relatively cheap VA to add more to those product pages that you know are popular and could drive traffic.

Noindexing all of the product pages will likely cause more indexing issues down the road than it's worth.

There is no reason to noindex any such thing.

Content comes in all shapes, forms, and sizes.

What would you gain from the trouble of noindexing them?

I can't even think of even one miniscule reason to even
      consider it.

    Hi,

None of the products are of high importance, the website is a download website which offers products for download. Content comes in all shapes and sizes, but as the panda guidelines go it looks for high quality pages. If I have pages which have small content across the website, I am leaking juice from higher quality pages to lower quality pages.

    Thanks

I don't understand why you need to de-index the already indexed pages.

As mentioned, if you read the guidelines for Panda, it looks for high quality pages, low quality pages affect your optimisation score.

Your argument for "leaking" link juice to those pages can actually be made in reverse, your thousands of thin inner pages are giving link juice to your strong pages/homepage. What I am trying to say is, what's your reason for the thesis of the leak of link juice?

Next, when you say low quality pages affect optimization score, whose optimization score? Unless it is Google's score then you have to understand that most third party evaluators base their algorithm on "SEO checks" or "keywords" and stuff which Google is a lot smarter than.

The question in all this is this: what's the reason for noindexing them? If the reason is you have been hit with a penalty or the rankings are terrible then adding content is something you should be looking into. If the reason is just because of the optimization score then don't mind it.

      Hi,

Good valid arguments there! I know that I need to optimise my main pages better, I am just concerned that I will be leaking link juice out to these thousands of pages, the majority of those pages have no backlinks to them.

That is why I had considered deindexing them.

Will you be able to add content on some of the pages? It might help if you add some fat content on your site. Are all the 8k pages thin content? There's nothing wrong with it, really. I've seen high ranking sites that have some pages in them with thin content. The issue will be when you try to rank those thin pages.

      Hi,

There is content of sort on all of the pages, unique text, however it is very thin. We are not looking to rank these pages as they are product pages for members only.

Our website is open to allow users to see all of the products we offer before becoming a member.

      Thanks again

If you're talking about linking WITHIN the site then link juice doesn't "leak", it only flows. If you're talking about outbound links (outside the site, DOFOLLOW) then that's leaking. Relax, you have more things to worry about that NOINDEXING them (mainly, strengthening your biggest traffic garnering pages).

Thank you for your input, my main focus now is working on the website (a redesign is in order).

Make sure to include re-designing the linking structure.

I suggest you categorize them and making the tier 1 pages the main categorizes for maximum link juice flow.

        Ex.

        plr.com/categ1/deepercateg/product
        site/tier1page/tier2page/tier3page

That way, you can focus on building up the tier1 pages since they are the major categories. Link juice will flow smoothly since the categs will feature the deeper categs and then the deeper categs will feature the products.

        Have fun!

Features of your product is your content. You don't need to add specific content for each every product. Matt Cutts also specified that it is not content duplication if you use same description used on brand website because it is practically impossible to write content of thousands of products. You don't need to de-index them, keep as it is. It is not the cause why your website is not ranking. Do some other research.

      Hi,

I never mentioned the site is not ranking it is. I am a little confused with the rest of your text.

I have no idea why you would want to noindex pages that could possibly convert traffic into sales.

I have a few thousand pages on multiple download sites, each of my pages averages maybe a sentence of text. Still ranking my pages.

If I were you, I would add content ONLY to most important products (those that you would like to sell more). For example for better keywords!

As mentioned, there are no products more important than others.
