Organic traffic dropped 80% last two days

Have a $500/month site that dropped from 175/uniques a day to 30 uniques a day yesterday, and today looks like its going to be low again.

Seems like a weird timing a few weeks after Panda 4. Anyone experiencing similar?

It's strange because my big two keywords are still ranking high (#3 and #6) in google. Seems that low-hanging keywords must be dropping off in SERPS, but hard to verify since webmaster tools lags a few days behind, and google. analytics no longer shows most keywords.

    Hey Crosby

Did you check your main keywords' ranking? Those who brought you most visitors? I think it's too early to conclude! Let go 3 or 5 days!

Is organic traffic is your only traffic source?

    Thanks
    - Jesisco

I wonder whether there was some sort of slight refresh that happened yesterday because one site of mine showed a huge upwards movement for no apparent reason at all.

Maybe it's the "Google Dance"... Wait a few days (or 2-3 weeks). Until then just do exactly what you did in the past...

ps: by the way what is your website to take a look (you can PM me to avoid ToS violation)?

    Hi,

Sounds like a Panda penalty. Though I can't be sure without more details.

It is same for me, I have a blog that dropped from 100+ uniques to 10+, but it is still on top of page 1(checked from different computers, with different proxies), so why people stop clicking?

Is there a holiday or something in US?

This sounds very like my case.

Interestingly enough, I was fine when Panda 4 supposedly dropped like 2 weeks ago.

I don't think 90% of SEO's could identify a penalty even if you posted your site.

So imagine the advice you will get by not posting your site.

Thank you, that was going to be my question.

The site, and the top 12 keywords you're trying to rank for.

I'd prefer not to post the site.

I wasn't asking anyone to solve why, I was simply asking if anyone else has experienced something similar this week.

There are so many intangibles, like the month of June, for example.
Ever wonder why networks run reruns in the summer?

Toss in current events, weather, new sites coming on each day in droves,
fads, fades, school's out, you name it, including mobile changing the world.

A penalty would most likely be a deindex. Since that's not the case, in this
one and most others, one has to wonder why the internet being fickle is
never considered by anyone but me.

Penguin runs 24/7, maybe you have some bad links and tanked your site.

-Yes, but in my case there is too dramatic decrease in traffic.

-I am still in number 1, 3, and 6 positions for a product right now.

-A few days ago a total of 100-150 people were clicking the links.
Now only 10+ clicks per day. The keyword is an evergreen keyword, so there is no reason people stop searching for it.

        Any ideas?

Some possible reasons for you: manual penalty, sandbox, Panda, Penguin, updates.

Don't worry much it happens. Wait for a week and see if traffic is back to normal. If problem still persists than you may be victim of Google Panda effect. You can check your backlinks. If you think any of them are spam than try removing them.

Updates roll out in weeks, not necessarily in days. And if your links were devalued that's not going to de-index you but definitely can reduce traffic. And those manual reviews seem to be on the rise so you can't rule that out.

And like some of have mentioned it could be temporary so the best idea is to wait a few days and see if it continues at the lower traffic rate. Knee jerk reactions when you really don't know what the cause is yet won't help. An 80% drop certainly is not seasonal or just a fluke normally. But with Google the devil is in the details and it's often hard to sort out.

Double check your onsite SEO, link profile, and try some fresh content. I usually put a new web page and see if it gets any love and that can help determine what's going on with the three big factors. If the page gets some traction at least you know it's not a domain thing and you can backtrack from there.

First question that pops in my mind: what are you comparing the last two days against? The previous two days? That's obviously not going yield any meaningful results. If you've got last June in your statistics that would be the right place to look.

I've got no clue how this works outside Finland but unless you're running a florist shop this might be a really, really slow weekend. People are grilling, celebrating any school diplomas their children or relatives got, and there's this religious holiday that might be kind of a big thing for this one major Christian sect. There's more than enough reason to expect a slow weekend in my home country. Can you find similar factors?

If you can't make a comparison to last year, wait couple of days to see if the trend continues. Even then it could be June that's to blame. July is the slowest month for certain businesses.

BTW, link your Analytics to Webmaster tools if you haven't already. That might help you a bit with the keywords.

A little to drastic to just be "fickle internet not clicking through for random scheduling/calendar/seasonal reasons":

Unfortunately, webmaster tools only has updated up until the day before the drop:

I would think that maybe Google Analytics was just having a temporary reporting or tracking error, except for my Amazon clicks dropping too:

So strange that my main keywords are all still on the first page of Google. Waiting to see when Webmaster tools updates, what it shows.

By looking at the Drop I am confirmed that somewhere something is wrong out with your site. It looks like you have been hi by penalty.

I agree with nik0 may be you had made posts on penalty links cause now a days if a site get penalty from Google & if your link is over there your site may also get damaged.

I have a similar issue with one of my sites, it seems keyword rankings have dropped specifically for google.com, although fine for co.uk
There are no penalty warnings in Webmaster Tools, and the site is still indexed, still showing in Google for other keywords, so I don't think it's a penalty issue. Just have to wait and see. Weird thing is, in WMT, there was some message about the site being redirected, some canonical issue. Don't think that's the cause. Maybe some old backlinks were deleted.

My lord what actually happened is ridiculous...

I changed main email addresses some months back, and my domain registrar was still using my old email (which I no longer receive). Turns out my domain was up for expiration, and I didn't realize it because I never received the warning emails.

However, when I checked the site it resolved how it normally does, because I guess my browser cached it (Shame on me for not using incognito, proxies, etc, to double check).

This plus the fact that the first day had SOME traffic (as opposed to NO traffic) also made me think it was still up.

It wasn't until I used a different computer (that hadn't been to the site before) that I saw the site was actually down.

    Facepalm. So hard.

These things do happen. I've got dozen sites that could be "up" for me even if the domain expired unexpectedly. I've got this habit of doing hosts name overrides in the dev state, and never cleaning that file...

Interestingly that graph you presented is almost identical to a site that's got their positions dropped from 1st to 2nd or 3rd page. The timing is about the same too. The jury is still out on that one, but I suspect their poor content and retro SEO finally caught up with them.

There are lot of third party tools to identify potential harmful links like Service to find and remove bad links
and Link Detox - Ready for Penguin 3.0? Link Audit & Risk Management Also you can find some sellers in fiverr to find bad links pointing to your site. Also watch out for anchor text ratio of your backlinks and manual penalty notice in google webmaster tools. Manual penalty need not be always for the entire site, sometimes you can receive partial penalty targeting only few specific pages of your site.
