Nofollow backlinks showing up in Google

I had always assumed that a no followed link, as well as passing no pagerank and not counting the anchor text, would NOT be shown in the link:mysite.com in Google. However on doing some keyword research on my competitors I am finding a few no follow links having been indexed.

Has this always been the case? Seems a little odd to me seeing as a link with no follow should have no positive attributes given to it.

As I explained in another thread, nofollow links have been and continue to be indexed by Google.

Yes, indexed certainly as no follow is different to no index. I am just a little surprised they count as a backlink when the backlink apparently has no value.

Yeah, No-follow basically tells Google what YOU think about that link, however they make up their own mind.....

I am pretty sure that nofollow backlinks still carry weight in terms of SEO. Basically, a nofollow backlink will still help you in terms of SEO and ranking in the SERPS.

Now, I am no SEO expert and do not claim to be one. However, I'm sure that there are many others who would agree with my take on nofollow backlinks.

Here is a quote straight from Matt Cutts of Google on Nofollow links.

"Now let's talk about the rel=nofollow attribute. Nofollow is method (introduced in 2005 and supported by multiple search engines) to annotate a link to tell search engines "I can't or don't want to vouch for this link." In Google, nofollow links don't pass PageRank and don't pass anchortext [*]."

It says in plain text here that the a link with the nofollow attribute does not pass page rank and does not pass anchor text.

Apparently though, they do count as backlinks!

As far as my knowlege, NOFOLLOW links are counted as a link still, but they do not pass the PR of the source page....... It has less weight than a DOFOLLOW link...

confused with the explanation above, because all people have a different answer about nofollow.
