Hi Guys,

How to know our website content is weak where Google is penalised to weak content, Moreover, I know duplicate content and can find duplicate content by the help of different on line tools, but how to find or know content is weak.

Your readers, Readers are the best way to know that your content is weak or not. If your site get consistent readers and attract reader to engage with your site than your site has some good content.

Bounce Rate is a good metric too!

If your visitors aren't going deep into your site because what you have on offer is the bomb then you're doing it wrong!

It's more often the site structure then the content itself.

I just had this with a batch of my Amazon sites, poor coded theme, weird plugins, after changing all that back to basics the content did start to rank.

And I did think it might had to do with the content first as it was all 300 words crappy posts really.

Reason I knew it wasn't the content was the fact that it often didn't even rank in top 500, which is a real bad signal of course.

I think bounce rate is not such particular metric to analyse the site contents because bounce rate depends upon a lot more than the contents.

So if someone is trying to find the quality of the contents then he or she must analyse the contents as a third party or ask someone to give you a favor to read the contents for you and help you to search out the loop holes present within the contents. Poor contents are the mixture of funky comments, grammatical mistakes, poor language and vocabulary as well as inappropriate contents.

Bounce rate can be altered though, depending on how you have analytics set up. I altered my analytics code and watched bounce rate go from 80% to 12% over the course of one month. Also, without changing anything else, session duration doubled.

Furthermore, you can get traffic directly to a sales page with incredible content and an amazing call to action on that page, you can get people to click through to whatever sales page you have and sell a product...and it's still called a bounce.

        Bounce rate isn't everything.

      I agree.

You will know that you have a weak content if it doesn't show any webpage visits of course. If it's something that won't arouse the interest of others then it is useless to post them. Better check the content yourself and review if it is something that interests you.

Weak content has the characteristics of:

    1. Duplicate content on your site.
    2. Plagiarism
    3. Content with lots of grammatical errors.

Very well said. I agree that finding duplicate contents on a website is by far the most annoying thing that a reader could ever run into. In the same way, plagiarism may take you a few steps ahead but not far and not for long. It will be discovered one way or another and believe you me, it can get very embarrassing when it gets found out. In terms of contents with a lot of grammatical errors, I would also stop reading from a website with a lot of it to begin with because I can tell right away that the rest will be just as bad so there will be no point of going on.

Bounce rate is tricky because a good affiliate site will have a high bounce rate.

Poor content is more so about time on page, backlinks and traffic. In the short run, your rankings and traffic are pretty random but if you don't see changes in at least 2-3 months, then you have a major content problem.

    My 3 step solution is:

    1. Refocus on 1 core problem
    2. Target a specific type of person
    3. Write content to that specific person

So if you have a dog training site, then only write about how to train your poodle for a few days. Imagine you are writing content to only Poodle owners. This will help you focus and find a target market. Once you get a market, then ask them what they want to read about.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9262589].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author nettiapina
You should ask someone who understands your target market, or is one of your potential readers. Try to find people who are verbally good enough, can judge the substance, and don't have any need to suck up to you. That's why forums like this may be a good place to find help.

Very often the tone, scope and structure are the major problems. Author or copywriter is writing whatever comes to mind instead of what the reader might like to know. The article is just a pile of superficial notes, and not really an end-result of a thought process. There are no good ideas or angles that make it worthwhile. The writer doesn't sound like an authority that you should trust.

And often you can add piss-poor grammar to the tally, too.

Um, what? Of course there's good content - it's the kind that makes money! Staying on the site is completely optional if you can squeeze few bucks from your visitors before that. There's more than one ways to skin a cat, you know.

If you plan your content and test it, you're more likely to succeed and probably don't need to tweak and change as much.

  • Bad content is basically content that doesn't do its job. It's a sales copy that doesn't convert. It's that blog post that nobody wants to read. Simple as that.

Take a honest look at your content.

You KNOW when your content is weak.

    - Is it well written?
    - Does it help anyone with a question?
    - Does it bring new information?
    - Is it well structured?
    ..etc

Some factors which will determine the strength of your content is whether or not your articles actually provide answers to questions your site visitors would have and also how in depth those articles are, such as length and scope of article. To make your article more authoritative, you could cover multiple facets of a topic, rather than only providing introductory type information. Or, combine several related articles into one so the reader gets more answers on one page, rather than having to visit multiple pages. This type of article would resemble a Wikipedia article or tutorial.

If you suspect your content is weak, it probably is.

When I write something, I ask myself whether the content is good enough to charge money for. Magazine quality. If it's not, I don't publish it. Better to publish one great article a month than one lousy article a day.

Check out this post on Bob Bly's blog, it sums up the difference between good and bad writing...

One high quality article is really all you need, but some writers take the easy way out and publish mini articles on their site thinking it will do the same. And, then want to know why there were no good results.

Content is in the eye of the beholder.

Nobody can tell you if you have great content and that mean anything.

In fact, I wish this "great content" crap would die. It makes no sense anyway.

What you want, is a page that attracts visitors. That can be short, long, dumb,
stupid, idiotic, funky, quick, hard, easy, whatever. And attract visitors for what
you intended to, leading to some profit. Until you start on your own attracting
visitors, you will never know. I myself could go to icanhazceezburger and think
that is the lamest stuff ever and surf out. Who cares? They make millions
catering to their intended audience, not what some SEO guru says about
        "great content."

I also think wikipedia is full of copied, error-prone junk. What do I know?
The masses have spoken about this "great content."

Webpages are made to promote and show just about anything on the internet.

If it's funny, makes one think, looks cool, makes one happy, answers a question,
entertains, who cares what joe blow on the WF thinks? People overthink the internet.

Great content = content that others share to look smart.

If your content does not make them look smart, they don't share it. If no one shares it, it might be weak content.

Contrary to popular belief..... great content does NOT equal unique content (or whatever today's myth is).

People do not share or link to content that makes them look stupid - no matter what links or shares one buys.

Bottom line - would YOU share your content to others as a genuine resource?

Funny you type that, I just responded in that other thread with the guest post that it's pretty smart to check out what authority sites are preaching and in fact kind of cloning them.

Afterall they have the bucks to hire "smart" writers and been in the game for a while to know what their readers want!

Personally I really don't like that type of blogging cause when I read it it feels for the full 100% like, hey where did I read that before....

Maybe I'm too active in this niche and should replace myself in the shoe's from the new comers.

Same like on this forum I have the habit to go against what the masses do, often ending up in fights that way, especially when I just enter a new forum Although that doesn't work out that well it does have it's advantages, when I compare my service to the masses of crappy link sellers for example I always have a feeling I'm far ahead of them, nowhere near whitehat though as I like to compete for the same prices, still I'm always a few steps ahead of the crowd. Whether that says something about me or the majority of this forum remains the question. After all this is a forum that attracts people that want to make a quick buck so they'll discover the sales sections faster then the speed of light.

I don't think that definition works. Paulgl mentioned icanhazcheezburger, and I've got another example. There was a link that went viral locally. "Soundboard" about a well-known rapper, and what he would say in different situations. And of course it was always some sort of "uhhhh!" or "ahhhh!"... I don't think anyone would find that piece of content "useful".

How about "content that fits the purpose"?

That's just a mechanical check. I'm not trying to pick on you, so apologies if it seems harsh to use your sentence as an example... It seems to go through the test even though it contains several errors that are obvious even to a non-native speaker like me. Grammarly seems to have only found the common problem with then/than.

You're still thinking of content in terms of what search engines want, not what the reader wants or needs. When you write for the reader, you would never keyword stuff or use in context links within your article as they are not natural. Just stick with writing for the human being who will be reading the page and search engine traffic will eventually follow.

Be your own judge - except of course bounce rates and user replies. Compare your content with the best sites in your niche. Doesn't matter if your site ranks number one or not - your content should always look like it belongs to the best site in the niche.

Do one thing. Ask any of your friend to read and understand your written content in just 20 seconds. After that ask your friend to explain what he has understood. You will get your answer.

Moral of the story is - Users only take a glance and if they find anything grabbing attention, they will stay, otherwise you loose them.
