Hello I'm Kind of new to SEO and its ways. If I have a website and I put the link to my website in my profile and save it. Then I pursue to actively engage with a forum. Making quality posts, comments and just socializing to help others on topics. Does this help give me backlinks without physically posting my link in a forum post or comment.? Besides I don't like to just run around posting my link everywhere! I think its spam stupid...

It would give you one backlink for the link in your profile. You can have non-spammy links by adding a link to your signature. It depends on where you're posting, though. Some sites may no-follow your link.

Signature links are backlinks, but if the forum is doing what they should be doing all the links in the threads are nofollow. Even if the forum focuses on a single topic/niche the backlinks may not be relevant to your own site. You also hear stories that Google is complaining about forum links, but usually the links were not from established big name forums.

I guess you might get someone clicking your sig links, but I'm skeptical about the SEO value.
    Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?
