Limit your tagging for optimization?

Hello. I'm new to this forum, and I hope someone can shine some light to my question. I was wondering if limit your tagging will optimize your search engine? I use stackoverflow and I notice that they only limit to 5 tags per post. Is there a strategy in why sites limit tagging for users?

Wouldn't it be good to tag a bunch of similar topics?

Thanks

PS: I just noticed that even when I post a topic in this forum, I'm limited to 5 tags only...

  • I think you have misunderstood my question here... I'm asking if there's a strategy in SEO for limiting tags?

    • Tagging and categorizing simply organizes content. Only use tags/categories if their relevant and necessary. Adding more tags or categories to a blog post will not help your SEO per say.

ps - if this is your biggest concern then you need a wake up call.
  • Adding more tags to your post is "keyword stuffing" and it may present your posts / pages as "over-optimized" in front of SEs. So it is better to limit the tag number to 4 or 5.
  • Yes, you should limit your tagging, all big site use this limitation. 5 tags per post are enough.
  • Usually most sites limit their tags to improve search (within the site). This is to narrow down searches to the top 5 most related content. I am not sure about this though, but a marketer once said that you should limit meta keywords to 3, just to be safe. Since then I limit keywords to 3. Not sure about tags though.

I always make it a point to delete Tag source code pages when installing a CMS (ex: Wordpress). Redundant pages (ex: Tag pages) junks up site structure. If you have a Category I don't see the need for even one Tag.
