Hey all, I'm new to this forum. Will do a proper introduction soon. Look for me!

.Wondering if I should go after this keyword with a somewhat new website

The keyword is "how to lose weight fast" it gets about 114,000 views a month. My site is relatively new, I'm blogging on it regularly.

Should I/will I be able to go for it? I'm a very hard worker, and I'm not one to give up easy.

Thank you for the help.

Nothing is impossible my friend, however you need to see all aspects before you want to target this keyword. Try to explore more about the keyword competition in the search engine, look at the top five websites and learn more about their strategy one by one. From this step, you will be able to identify your problems.

Find the best solution to beat them, and then you should consider about your time, resources, money, etc. Thanks

No offense but I doubt you'll outrank competition like slimfast.com (#1) or webmd.com (#2). If you could outrank those competition you wouldn't be here asking other people If you could outrank them, you would just do it... or at least try/test.

Have to agree. Anybody who has to come to the WF to ask for advice on a keyword shouldn't be attempting to go up against the big boys.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

You can go for it, but it will be a lot of work and you may not be able to reach your goal without deep pockets. I would recommend you go after something that is going to be easier to handle, but will still make you profits.

As said before I just wanted some peoples opinions. I'm not scared to go after this and nor am I afraid to try.

Just wanted to see how I would approach this. Perhaps with a parasite?

I really do want to go for it. keywords with 14,000 in this niche seem just as hard so myswell shoot high.

What amount of capital in a general estimate would i have to put in to this? I am willing to put money into this. But not an insane amount yet.

You seem to forget that time = money.

I wouldn't even bother chasing the weight loss industry. It's full of blackhat churn and burn spammers, paid advertising from multi-million companies, affiliate marketers advertising crap and multi-million web properties like WEBMD spending ridiculous amounts on marketing.

Do I have the resources to outrank them, on my own, long-term? No. If I want to "beat" them, I'll need to use my private blog network, and build my PBN on a lot larger scale. Then, my rankings won't even be long-term as Google will penalise me later on down the line.

So, why would I bother my time, spending money to build my network even larger, spending time writing content, just to have my site penalised in the end?

You'll never beat WEBMD etc going at it "whitehat". They have bigger marketing departments, more staff, bigger budgets, a better brandname, better contacts and a better, ALREADY ESTABLISHED presence.

I appreciate you set yourself high goals - but please don't waste your time chasing crap like this. Go after smaller, achieveable terms. Find a long-tail keyword. Something like, "Best weight loss plans for men". Might only bring 2,000 visitors a month, but it'll take a lot shorter to setup and be a lot easier to rank for. Monetise it with Amazon/Adsense/Clickbank and scale it up. Once you have 50 web properties, you'll be earning a healthy income.

Chasing the big boy search terms, you'll never earn a dime. 6-months down the line, you'll give up or get penalised and most likely kill yourself.

Thank you for this, some really good advice you have there. Thank you for spending the time helping me out and writing this. I have some shorter long tail keywords that I can totally focus on. We'll see how those go.

Basically it's focus on one extremely hard keyword, that could fail, or focus on 50 easier long tail keywords.

Definitly focusing on the 50 easier ones!

Listen, my first website was about celebrity news. I wrote 4 500-word articles a day. I built comment links and built countless web 2.0's. I did this over a 6-month period hoping for a glimpse of success. I had the ambition like you, and somehow thought I could rank for celebrity news.

6-months later, I was still page 20 on the SERP's, with £70 a month income.. Talk about a WASTE OF TIME! The best thing you can do in SEO is understand your place in the chain. You will never beat WEBMD, like I will never beat BBC or CNN. The good SEO's are the ones who find little holes in the search space and take advantage to bring in a consistent income. Once it's up and running, off we go finding another little trickle of income.

If you look at any affiliate marketers income, it's always like:

            amazon - $500
            webhosting - $1200
            seotool1 - $200
            seotool2 - $300

We don't have the resources, time or budgets to compete against the big corporate boys.

There are almost 62 million search results for that keyword phrase on Google UK alone. The competition would be a little high, for a starter blog.

Go for longer tail keywords, they may get less traffic but less is better than none.

Also try to reach out to the lose weight community, they are very active online. You will soon find that you will get immediate traffic from the community, and long term through SEO.

Two things you need to keep in mind:

    1. What exactly is your long term objective? If you are looking to sell affiliate products, look for long tail keywords that would cost you less and bring fast results.

    2. If you really want to rank for that KW, be prepared to invest heavily because its a high competition KW.

Having said that, regular blogging will start bringing you results after a couple of months.

Just avoid that keyword and pursue a low-competition keyword in the weight loss industry (there are tons of them). Even if you want to go after that keyword, you will still have to start with the low competition and low traffic keywords until your site gains enough authority to rank for that keyword, which could take years.

    Hi there,
you can go for any keyword, any niche, any blog as long as you are willing to pay the price. The price here doesn't mean buying anything. But is to double your work when thing is hard. Double backlinks building, double content promotion, content frequency can remain same. I think you got my point.
The only thing that would happen if you choose a keyword with high competion would be it would take more time to rank. So, if you want to just start now look for the keyword with low competition and high search rates.

I don't like the keyword at all. There is no way to lose weight fast, so i am not sure how you're even blogging about it unless you're lying to your visitors.

Just like you know itll take you a lot of work and time to rank this keyword, you won't google search "how to rank keyword fast" because you know it isn't possible.

Maybe another option rather than trying to compete in Google search is to simply use those words as part of a Facebook or Adwords marketing campaign. That puts your ads right in the front of people already interested in weight loss. And, for Google search, it puts your ads above any of the ranking sites that you could never out rank anyway.
