Hi guys, I'm a newbie in internet marketing and I'm trying to build my first niche website. I found the physical product to promote, but I'm not sure if I should build website around that product because the first website that appears in google is amazon when I search for product name. Should I try to build a website and compete against amazon or better found another product?

Don't promote a product - waste of time unless it's always an IN-DEMAND item and there is no official site for it.

Focus on categories - e.g. food processor reviews.

Then build posts for each food processor review that you do. Problem with promoting products, is:

    a) competing against manufacturer
    b) competing against amazon (big retailers etc)
    c) limited earnings

Now ofcourse, this doesn't necessarily apply to promoting clickbank etc.. But for Amazon I'd suggest going with category rankings.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

You hit the nail right on the head my friend, I recommend the exact same thing. Outranking amazon for an individual product is ridiculously hard, however ranking for categories is much much easier and can be just as profitable. Specially for keywords like best food processors etc etc

      • In addition to what these fine folks have said, look at how Amazon's page is set up as far as onpage SEO. If they aren't targeting the keyword you are in URL, in Title, in Description, etc...then they are beatable (with time). Especially with an aged domain. Amazon can be very beatable, in some cases, as usual it's hard to give an answer without all the data. If your keyword is something like "blue widget model 1500"...I would forget about the idea, if the keyword is "cheap blue widgets"...now you've got a topic that you can build a website around. Does that make sense?

What the rest already said and if you're just starting out I would avoid the "best / reviews" keywords as they might be a bit too tough for you.

            Alternatives:

            - top ten
            - top rated
            - buy
            - discount
            - for sale
            - under $xx
            - best ... for ...

You'll probably have more luck with that.
