Rank drop and weirdness with first page

On June 4th I dropped from page #3 page 1 to #5 page 8. I had been on page 1 for a year.

What is weird is that when you search for my main keyword it is listed on page 8 as a subpage.

In other words search for my main keyword and instead of showing up as the first page of my site as it had been for a year it shows as one of my specific product article pages.

Does anyone know what that is all about?

Competition will not send you to page 8 from being #3 on first page unless he means someone was doing negative seo. Which is what it seems like. To confirm, look at your latest backlinks in google WMT or any of the other backlinks checker and see if you notice a huge amount of crappy backlinks all of a sudden.

If you don't, did you do anything after you achieved the #3 spot or change anything on-site ?.

The only thing I did was change my theme and add some more content.

Sounds like an algorithm penalising your "first page". If your homepage was ranking on page 1, and is now nowhere - that sounds like an algorithmic penalty. Pages that have been stable for a long time don't just "disappear". They slowly drop down in the rankings - and this drop should be noticeable day-to-day. I'd look through your link profile, on-site optimisation and look to correct things.

Google Webmaster Tools will list any manual actions - so check there. Things to look for on the page in question are:

    - Quality of links (blog comments? Web 2.0 spun spam?)
    - Keyword optimisation (how high is the keyword % on the text? Try reducing it if over 5%).
    - Does the page read naturally and provide engagement/value? (If a manual action is taken, you need to appeal to a human, not a bot).

Take a step back and think, "Would I recommend this page to a friend?". If not, go and fix it so that you would. Far too many people focus on the cash profits, and forget about the long-term.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

There are no manual actions in webmaster tools. However under who links to you I found this:
      Domain Links
      m.biz 536

In domain sigma it says that it is an english site, has page rank of 1 and alexa rank as 72,000

HOWEVER if you go to the site it is chinese. Do you think this caused it?

How do I get rid of it?

Are you using a free wordpress theme and where did you download it from?

Obviously, there is something wrong with the Wordpress theme you recently changed.

Wordpress theme has a big effect on rankings because of how each theme is coded.

If the drop is that fast, I would say it's a penalty on your side. I haven't seen a natural drop that fast in my life unless there's a penalty behind it.

I would say, check your SEO the past few months and see what you did wrong. And try to remove those bad links.

If the homepage is gone but there is no manual penalty letter then over-optimization USUALLY causes this. Check your on-page settings and content and see if you are stuffing your keywords too much.

Well, I think the reason behind this drop might because you competitors are gaining over you. They might have done quite a good SEO than you have done, I would say try having a look over to your backlink profile, If this is happening because of the backlink then you are sure going to get you position back by improving your backlink.

The free theme was fine for a year, then in June I switched to a paid theme. I have not stuffed my keywords at all. The writing has all be natural and original just reviewing each product. It is an Amazon review site. Unless google now hates Amazon review sites?

I have not done any linking. The links are all natural links.

However I found that there is a Chinese site called m.biz that gave me over 536 links?
Do you think this is the cause?

How do I get these links off?

No...just NO. That will NOT send him to page 8 even if google decided to rank for that keyword.

OP: it looks like your theme. The domain your mentioned is chinese site, you can disavow but i am not sure it is causing this. Did you check if the pages that were referring to your post have disappeared somehow ?

EDIT: oh nvm, its an affiliate site ? this could very well be panda 4.0 penalty

I know that Panda 4.0 hit around the end of May. Why would an affiliate site with lots of content that was on page 1 for a year suddenly drop like a rock? And it dropped AFTER I had just posted a new article.

I don't know what to do now.

Would getting a new domain and putting the old content on the new domain help?

This is getting stranger. My rank is improving however when I searched for mykeyword that used to show up with the front page it is now showing a different product page. Last week it was showing as one product page, now a different product page was picked. I can't figure this out.

You need to update the content of your pages which dropped rankings.

Get comfortable with Google's Disavow Tool.

This smells like negative SEO. Using the Disavow Tool is a pain, but it's a reality of SEO in 2014.

OK so I'm back on page one. I found that after switching themes the robots.txt showed a disallow for my sitemap. I changed back to the theme I had before I changed and then fixed the robots.txt and got my rankings back. I don't know if that was the reason but it was the only thing I did.
