I have various asense sites that are wordpress sites.
Something i have never worked out is if allowing comments and/or pings helps or hurts me?

I think it is only good if people comments on your blog and pings back to a post they like.It has nothing to do with Adsense.

The question i am asking is on an adsense site does it help or hurt my traffic/rankings to have comments and/or pings turned on?

For my niche blogs I leave comments on and turn pingbacks/trackbacks off.

99.9% of the trackbacks will be from scrappers and I don't want to give them even a nofollow link.

Comments I keep but I moderate every comment. If a comment is good, meaning keyword rich, I let it stand, but if it's not I either delete it or send it to Akismet. I leave the comments on because there's SEO value in new content and new keyword combinations.

I was looking to ask this exact question. My question now would be, has anything changed since 2009 that would change the answer that comments are good for an adsense blog.
