Generic Link Text building - Help

Hi,

I have not done much SEO since my site got hit by the first Penguin/Panda update. It's been so long I don't remember the difference. I was #1 on many competitive terms for years. I did most of the SEO myself and was under the impression that offpage optimizing was safe. I diversified the link text but only between about 6-8 main keywords. Those were my best keywords and I still rank at the top for most of them in Yahoo and Bing.

Most of the services I've spoken to say I have not been penalized. I just have too many links coming in of those main keywords. What is the best way for me to get links to reduce the percentage? I know quality is important. But the anchor text is going to be generic. Would I need quality links for generic anchor texts or would any link (not blatantly spammy) work to reduce the percentages?

I'm glad to work to get high quality links on great sites. But if I just want basic anchor text what do you recommend as course of action. It's been years since I've done anything to these sites. It is a great piece of real estate that I would love to get back in the game. Any help would be appreciated. PM or respond here please. Thanks.

  • Think about it. If you wanted to link to Wikipedia, what anchors would you use? Most likely "Wikipedia", "wikipedia.com" or the name of the article, "back pain".

Stop worrying about anchor % ratios and focus on building links that will drive traffic. Successful websites today have 80% anchor text as their main KW. Others have 10%.

    It really doesn't matter.
  • Dilute your anchor text ratio by getting backlinks via profile links from high pr, Gov and Edu sites. Also by manual commenting in sites using facebook comment plugin. After the recent google algorithm updates it is not safe to have any thing more than 10% of your anchor text for particular keyword. It's safe to have most of your back links with anchor texts as url, domain name or your own name.
