So I have a website that I launched and had a company do a social media campaign on and I was wondering if the results would have an impact on our ranking... Here are the basic results:

Facebook Likes - 5,085
Shares - 538 (Stories Shared)
Twitter - 196 Followers
Instigram - 140+ Followers
Pinterest - 110 followers

The main thing i am wondering is if the Facebook Shares will have an impact on our ranking...? I have attached a screenshot of one of the Apps on Facebook they use to share our downloadable kits. People have to share the kit on Facebook to download it for free. Let me know what you guys think I could expect to see in regards to results. Thanks

It won't impact your ranking. Social media is great for traffic. Not very useful for rankings.

I remember seeing an interview with Cutts where I believe he said these social signals are not currently direct ranking factors. Take that for what you will.

Social signals are a part of ranking factor. We may not believe 100% what Matt say

Hi, what ranking are you referring to? If its Page Rank then i believe its not gonna affect your ranking if its on traffic i believe it does have a huge impact regarding your traffic.

  • social media gives you traffic and impact on ranking as well....but the fact is your social media likes does not matter but the engagement level of the traffic on theses social media pages with your posts matter.for example the relevant comments and conversation on your post and your interaction with the user.

The more you interact, and get people to share/tweet/whatever the more you potentially get traffic. However, there's no direct SEO benefit to speak of. As Cutts points out, it would be very difficult for Google to even use social media engagement as a ranking factor. The "social signals believers" in the IM crowd don't seem to have any solid evidence to back their claims.

There's a sort of indirect way social media can affect SEO. You're getting your material to potential fans, who may like it enough to link your articles from their sites. This can also explain the correlation between social media campaign and increased search visibility.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

Ok course any social signal are always great. But it's better to get them legitimately but back links are still king. You don't need to be buying fake social signals to show authority. If you get links from strong authority pages you can rank your site, of course this depends on (competition and your anchor text ratios). That's one of the primary factors that will get you ranked. You could not have social signals and still rank very well if you're website include strong backlinks

Thanks for the info, just to clarify though, the people who liked our page are all real, they actually interact with the posts and comment on them, like them and share them... one post was "Shared" over 540 times. They run social media contests and have 8.1 million people in their platform who sign up for campaigns they like so all the people are actually real. When I look at my Google Analytics I can see the traffic coming from all over the US and what pages they visit. Hope that clarifies some things! Thanks again for the info!

    What exactly are social signals?
Facebook blocks google bots, and uses javascript iframes for like buttons, not to mention javascript redirects back to your website from the blocked facebook page so there are 0 social signals from it. Google can't even read it.

This is simular with all the above mentioned social media websites,

twitter is redirects, java etc, - most likely no social signals here.

pinterest is nofollow these days, but does have a readable link to the webpage, but two clicks in, the first click goes to their copy of your image. They could theoretically use this for social signals, if they ignored nofollow. But they would have to send their spiders down millions of nofollow dead ends, this seems unlikely.

Instigram I don't know, I have never visited there but I'm sure its about the same thing.

Google + is probably the only one they use for "social signals" but still passes no pagerank.

Use social media for the sake of social media traffic, if you get huge enough amounts of it, you might get a backlink or two. Also if they comment, you will get some SEO benefits, assuming your comments are google readable. Many aren't these days.

Just so you know I have one webpage with over 100 000 social media shares, and it is PR N/A - Google pretty much treats it as non existent.

If you are having 100 000 social media shares, you will be getting plenty of visitors from that itself and I will not be worried too much about the PR of the site. Getting visitors and making money only matters and not what is the PR of the site. When people see the social media sharing statistics in your site it will improve your trust factor. Having few thousand likes is very much better than 0 like in facebook like button.

I feel sad when I see lot of people chasing for links to get High Page Rank. They do not seem to understand that PR of the website is not much important, but the organic rankings and getting free targeted visitors is the most important factor. We cannot blame them too, as they have been lied to by the so called SEO gurus that high PR leads to good rankings.

Personally I have seen no PR websites overtaking higher positions for some good keywords. If we have good high authority links and good social media presence it will naturally get us free traffic which means more money out of our sites.

I believe G+ links are dofollow as they always show up in webmaster tools so I don't see how they wouldn't pass PR. I don't know of many high PR Google profiles or pages but it could still be possible.

The impact of social media on ranking is minimal but stable; the aim of social media is to engage the people with the business and describe about the business services and products. The main thing is that try to engage the geo specific people to support the business.
