I don't think this has been asked.

I'm using Arial and Small on most of my ads with fairly good CTR. But just wondering if there is a size and font that works good / better for you?

Cheers

I'm not John, but I have been testing the new sizes this month on a few of my sites. I've noticed an overall 2-5% increase in CTR with using the medium size font for each of the sites I'm testing. I would suggest to everyone to test it out for themselves. Of course, as with any changes...results will vary. Hope that helps.

I agree, I haven't had good results with the feed stuff and don't recommend it. It works better to put partial content into a feed and get people to click through to the full content on a normal HTML page, and put ads there. Fewer people will click through to the full content, but you'll make more money from AdSense despite that.

Just my opinion.

Cool Adrian, thanks for the tip. I used Word 2007 for this one. It has a nifty Save As PDF function which works like a charm. I can't live without it.

perhaps if anyone wants to create thread PDFs (and have a little time and patience), I used "Thread tools > Show Printable Version" then copied and pasted all 19 pages into a Word doc. From that I used Word's Save As PDF option to create the 444 pager....

Thanks to all who've said "Thanks" 8)

Update: I've posted a second version in which I've replaced John's signature with a tell-tale that assists finding his responses in the thread. If this helps you in scanning the doc or using the Find/Search tool in PDF reader, that's cool, otherwise the raw thread copy might be more suitable - YMMV.

The tell-tale is

Try it now. Its fixed!

(I had switched the blog to more user friendly permalinks and had to hardcode the external URLs to make them work)

btw, the telltale version knocks off ~150 pages since I also got rid of manual line breaks. So if you have to print this...

Angela and Paul's backlinks might be a better option for you. No language barrier there. It's probably less work than writing articles, but more effective because of the high PR domains which you can't find on french websites!

Just my 2 cents!

Did you ever check out the built in translator in MS Word. Haven't used it, may be it'll do a reasonable job and you can publish your articles on English article directories?

Good luck!

It's what I am using as well. I don't want to write articles. It's not one of my favorite thing to do. This way I think is faster and stronger as well.

I'm thinking of putting a simple domain checker tool I've developed up as a low-cost WSO and would like a few beta testers. Please PM me if you're interested. The tool will take a bunch of keywords as input (including spreadsheets from the AdWords Keyword Tool) and look for available domain names. I'm putting in some features to make it especially useful for people using John's method. I'd love to have some Mac users -- the code's written in Java and will work on Windows, Mac and Linux, but I can't actually test the latter two.

Had some questions about my tool:

The tool is something I developed for myself to take away the drudgery of checking for domain name availability... I've used the GoDaddy online bulk registration tool before, but I wanted something that could take a wide variety of inputs and work on them, and also check for specific variations (like "xxxxxinfo.com", "xxxxxhelp.com", etc.). It does no analysis, just checks to see which domains are available. I use it with another tool I have that takes an AdWords spreadsheet (exported from the AKT) and filters keywords that meet specific criteria... then I take the list and blast it through the domain tool to find available domains based on those keywords.

Right now it's all command line based (I'm a geek), so I have to put up a pretty user interface so normal people can use it.

Hi John (and everyone else),

I've read a large portion of the 953 posts on this thread (since the last time I checked, 200 have been added), and as someone who most've failed so far, it is extremely inspiring.

I have a question to you that may seem basic, but I'm utterly lost here. I think it's affecting my Google rankings so I'd be very grateful to anyone who can help me find the right solution to this.

My question is how to structure an entire site regarding keyword phrases, assuming the site has a main page and several secondary pages (i.e. 5-8).

Say you have 15 keywords, with the first and second much better than the others (the primary and secondary phrases).

So far when I've built sites, I've used the primary and secondary kw phrases in the homepage, and several of the others. However, in the secondary pages I've also used some of these phrases - with the difference being, sometimes the primary keyword isn't in the title but is rather in the ALT tag of an image.

Whenever I could, I tried to use more relevant keywords in each page. But at times the content is pretty similar (think a website which reviews all canon cameras - you can pretty much use every phrase in every page and it would make sense).

Someone told me that the correct approach would be to use the primary/secondary keywords only in the main page, and to use the minor keywords sparingly in the secondary pages - and NOT use the primary or secondary keywords at all.

Since I see some of my sites going down in rankings I figure I'm doing something wrong. Can John or anyone else help with this? I'd be very very grateful.

Many thanks,
Solarwind

Ok Chucky, thanks for advice but, who are Angela and Paul? I know only few guys here.

About built in translator, no, never used, but yes, i can translate from french to english with some work and a dictionnary for help. You think that Google will not see something strange if i get all backlinks in an english content to a french website?

Thanks for encouragement, i will work hard

I just want to say after my last post, i have been doing a little bit of bookmarking and pinging my site and after a week my site has been indexed (an hour ago) and is currently at No.4 on the first page. I have had one click so far earning me about 30cents! I am well chuffed.

I have nexttag.com above me though, will they be hard to overtake to No.1 do you think?

Magy, don't worry about the fact that the French article directories do not have high PR. The truth is, "high-PR links" from EzineArticles and such is a myth.

Why? PageRank (PR) is calculated on a per-page basis. Yes, the home page for EzineArticles.com has PR 6, but the articles you submit won't have that level of PR. Most of your articles will have PR n/a, 0, 1 or (if you're lucky) 2. The more articles you submit, the more PR your articles will get because of all the links between them and your bio, but on the whole an individual article will not have a high PR. Sure, your article will get a temporary PR boost from being listed on the EA home page or in the "new articles" pages for the various categories, but that boost is very short because your link will fall off the page(s) very quickly.

Each link counts as a vote, even if it's from a page with low PR. So you want links back to your site and you want good anchor text for those links. Don't worry about whether the article directory has a high PR or not. As long as it's being crawled on a regular basis by Google, the link in your article to your site will be found and that's what's going to get your site to rank.

In other words, just write and submit articles to the directories you know about and don't waste your time trying to translate them into other languages. As you said, it would be weird to link to a non-English site from an English article anyhow.

For a more in-depth discussion of how to boost the PR of your EzineArticles submissions, see:

Link To Your EzineArticles Profile

and

EzineArticles Expert Author Bio Bookmarking

The main point, though, is to keep submitting articles. Over time you build up a critical mass that causes all your articles to rank higher. Look at the list of top EzineArticles submitters and check out the PR of their bios. The top 5 have PR 4 or 5, mostly due to the number of articles they've published. You get PR from all the internal links in EzineArticles.com and then links to the individual articles when they get republished.

Congrats on getting your site up and your first click! Nextag will not be hard to overcome. A few articles and you'll get it done in most cases. None of those types of sites are too difficult to outrank. Just give it a little time and effort and you will get there...

So I have 24 sites made but only have adsense on 6 of them because the other ones are poorly ranked and receiving no traffic. I am going to keep plugging at these sites to get them to make at least $50 per day before I create more.

What kind of success are you guys having?
Not yet man it's still too soon. I've got 14 sites all with adsense. Only 2 so far are on the first page for their keyword.

I've got tons of backlinks for the sites but at least 5 are still not indexed by google yet.

It's all a waiting game but in a few weeks I can see myself making a lot. With only the two sites both in around 10th position on the first page, I'm still bringing in 2+ dollars a day, and over 100 organic visitors. So you can see the potential once I have all 14 sites at 1-5th spot.

I know I could be making more money than that too cause my ads aren't set up the best way yet. I need John's WSO :p.

I found a niche market that has low competition general keywords, like digital picture frames (this is not the niche). I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for content on my site with such general keywords. Since it's not a specific product, like Philips digital picture frames, what can I do to write something meaningful?

Ok thanks again for help Eric, i will only work with 2 directories that seems to be good. I still wait to see if google will index my new website correctly (with the redirection 301) my first one is still with the old adress in results, google is not fast .

This is normal. The Google ranking bounce means that your site will rank highly for a day or two because of its newness, then it will fall in the rankings only to pop back to its "natural" ranking after a week or two. Keep going!

OK, everybody take a deep breath =8~). For all you guys that are already seeing some action, that is great. Adsense is not a tomorrow deal since you need to build rankings and get some traffic.

Slow, but sure is good. Just like the tortise and the hare. Plan your work, work your plan and quit looking at your adsense account every 10 minutes =8~).

You don't have to just submit to EZA, there are other article directories that are also good and can speed up your progress.

Don't take your counts from any source as absolute, they should be used as a guide to find popular search terms with little competition. Just because it says 1000 or 3000 dooesn't mean you will get that number regardless of your position.

Don't sweat the small stuff and keep adding to the number of pages. And don't worry about the ups and downs of the rankings, it's normal.

Keep up the good work, I always enjoy reading the success stories.

Not really, I've outranked nextag without any backlinks to my site.

I've started listing down all the sites that I've overtaken so I can get a better idea of competition.

Thanks for sharing your plan in details. Really appreciate it.

I thought Adsense is dead, but you proved me all wrong.

Care to share some of the sites that you are outranking so at least we can have a general idea of what is possible?

Kevin.

To add to terryd's list, I have also easily outranked:

Bizrate
DMOZ
Yahoo Groups
Shopping.com
Kaboodle

I think it depends on the niche though, and the search engine.

I kind of like the idea of sticking with one site until I have it making consistent money and then move on to the next niche blog.
I think in general you want to keep all the writing relating to the keywords you're targeting on your own sites -- so if you're talking about "widgets", by all means write content about widgets but put it on your widget site. You don't want EA or other sites to outrank your own site using your own content.

But if you want to use EA to generate traffic, not just links, you'll want to submit articles to it, but those articles should be geared to humans, not search engines. Be creative and be sure to avoid the keywords you're targeting in the title and main text. You might even want to avoid them in the bio, because after all you have other articles linking to your site with the right keywords.

So I have 24 sites made but only have adsense on 6 of them because the other ones are poorly ranked and receiving no traffic. I am going to keep plugging at these sites to get them to make at least $50 per day before I create more.

What kind of success are you guys having?
Same here.

I'm back to around $5/day now. Most of my mini sites got nuked by Google a good week ago. Now I'm trying to build way bigger sites, with more content, targeting slightly different keyword phrases. Got 25 sites up, going to keep promoting them until I hit $50-$75/day. Fun fun.

There is no right or wrong to adding content. You can add a lot and then add more here and there if you want. With blogs you usually keep adding content here and there - static sites can be different. Your choice.

3-blogger has no static home page and also no pages or posts manners like WordPress blogs?? how can i work as u guided me so ?!!
You are asking the same questions asked in another thread - and THIS thread is not about blogging - it's about creating sites and the OP uses xsitepro.

Searching and researching are not the same. Do a google search for the term

broad vs exact keyword match

and you'll find good explanations about the difference between the two.
