Duplicated Copy and SEO Question

Hey y'all,

I own an ecommerce site and am re-hauling the product pages to include tabs with descriptions of my shipping and return policies. The copy for these is going to be identical from page to page, and I was wondering if this would potentially hurt my ranking. If so, are there any solutions you would recommend?

Any help is much appreciated : )

    Hey friend,

I sort of in the same situation, what i have found is that we should be okay with this duplicate content. Matt cutts stated that duplicate content isn't an issue unless you're doing it for some black hat reasons.

so in other words you will be ok.

If you have enough unique other content on the product pages, I wouldn't worry about it.

But wouldn't it be easier to make a seperate page for your shipping and return policies? That way, you can be sure it isn't a problem. Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply guys : )

Dr los3 - Thank you, just what I wanted to know!

Jelle Z - Thanks for the help! I do include a full page for my shipping and return policies, but for customer convenience I include a snippet of the full version in tabs so they don't have to change pages.

As long as it's on your domain, and is unique otherwise, you'll be fine.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

That won't be a problem. The Google algos are smart enough to know that you are not posting duplicate content to game the rankings. Matter of fact, things such as addresses, product names, disclaimer policies etc. are exempted for the "duplicate content" rule.

I haven't seen Google counting duplicate content for return policies or shipping pages in my experience. I think it is expected for these pages to be somewhat similar for any site to another site.

If you are worried about it, you can always de-index the page and make sure it isn't scanned by the spiders.

I am facing similar problem. My web developer is taking ages to complete an overhauled shopping cart website. My web developers are using a separate domain as their 'development' server. I am concern whether my original website will be penalized for duplicate content because I am beginning to see this 'development domain' being indexed by google search?

I agree with the comments above. I think the difference between what you're proposing and other sites is that the content is already on your site so google will take that into consideration, especially when you are just using excepts as well.

If you were copying content from other sites then you'd have to use something like copyscape to check the unique content, but I guess that's another subject altogether.

Not much to add to others comments but it looks like you should be ok.

I believe duplicate content should only be a concern if its been duplicated from another site or its just a bunch of repetitive keyword-stuffed junk copy.
